161603 2003-07-20 09:02:00 I get the the following message when my pc fist boots up..."Primary IDE channel no 80 conducter cable installed"...could this be the reason why Win 98 constantly crashes and if so how do i fix it.

System
p3 866mhz
Gigabyte mother board
40g hdd
128 sdram
win 98 (re-installed over & over again)

161604 2003-07-20 09:12:00 Replace the IDE cable (the wide flat one that connects your HDD to the motherboard) with an 80 conductor one. Should cost about $16.

80 conductor ones have extra earthed conductors between the data ones, which allows higher speed transfer as they act as a shield. As far as I know the HDD will limit the data rate if this cable is not correct.

It will cause the HDD data transfer to be slower, unknown if it would actually cause crashes though.

161605 2003-07-20 10:49:00 As godfather says the 40 wire cable is unlikely to cause crashes - replacing with 80 wire will increase the data transfer rate all things being equal.

So it appears you have some other problem - faulty RAM? Are there any drivers showing up as not being compatible with your hardware in device manager? e.g. motherboard?

Do you mean installing over the top or clean installs?

161607 2003-07-21 00:18:00 What are the crashes? What error message do you get? If your memory is in more than one stick, try running with one at a time. If it works like that, the stick removed is faulty (probably slow). :D Or see if you can buy/borrow another stick and try substitution.
The cable will not cause crashes.
