161559 2003-07-20 08:37:00 A friend bought a PC Co machine from Farmers - he went to buy a microwave!!! He asked me to help set it up, so I went round with my toolbox of tricks only to find it wouldn't boot. Not from floppy, bootable CD or HD. Sometimes it would jam up in bios, other times it would only show a black screen grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Hope it doesn't take them too long to get it going. I wasn't going to open it up as the last one I looked at had a seal on the case which voided the warranty if broken. wotz (335)
161560 2003-07-22 03:20:00 Take it back and demand the cash back most of the retail PCs are junk that are hard to upgrade and over priced as well kiwibeat (304)
161561 2003-07-22 07:10:00 Yep I agree take it back. Jump up and down scream and shout. Froth at the mouth and feel perfectly free to bounce around off the walls as you tell them what utter crap they sell :D

Maybe we need a FAQ on just how to build up your own system from scratch and what parts you should get to do it. I am seeing more and more often posts about prefabricated computers (just like houses) that are falling over and failing to live up to expectations or simply no going at all from the start.

161562 2003-07-22 07:13:00 Theres a million and one FAQ's out there already, and you dont really need to know anything special to do it. Buy the parts, plug em together, fix the problems.

Someone could probably make a bit of money with an 0900 number to help people with the last step, thats the one that scares most people, and thats also the only one that screws you as by the time you reach it your PC isnt working so you cant go online ;-)

161563 2003-07-22 07:20:00 Normally I would have checked to see if there was a FAQ already but I still can't access the FAQ section at all for some stupid reason it just won't load, yet these pages are fine. X-( Odin (227)
161564 2003-07-22 08:46:00 If it was anything like mine, all the PCI cards and the AGP card needs to be reseated, that is, remove them and then put them back in again. PC assembly firms like the PC Co and others like the former PC Direct, are wrong in putting those "warranty void" stickers on those PC's. PC architecture is specifically designed to be user configurable. For example, how are you suppossed to install a Network card? Mine supposedly has one built on the mother board but the case doesn't have an RJ45 socket for the network. Duh????. I had a whinge at the service manager about the warranty stickers and so did NZ PC World. The outcome was that we wouldn't be losing warranties if we took the sticker off, but if you are concerned, heat it with a hair dryer and you can remove it without breaking it. But in closing, since it was bought from Farmers, take it back!!!! sinndisco (4059)
161565 2003-07-22 09:01:00 They took it to PC Co today (shut on Mondays - totally unbelievable) and were told it was a stuffed mobo. Have to order a new one. wotz (335)
161566 2003-07-22 09:05:00 I also have had trouble with the FAQs but for the first time in two months got one to open tonight. Takes a long time even on dsl.

re The PC Co machine - by all means take it back and demand a refund. However, strictly, under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 you have to give Farmers a reasonable opportunity to fix the machine. After all this might be a one-off problem never before encountered (cough!!!).

I'd argue that it is not fit for it's purpose under the Sale of Goods Act but the Consumer Guarantees Act would probably scare up more attention.

Good Luck

Bruce B knows about the problem with the very slow loading FAQ's and it is being looked at I believe. There was a thread about this problem not long ago.

Hmm .... 70 secs for one FAQ to fully load on Jetstream Starter is not toooo bad :D

161568 2003-07-22 10:17:00 Yes its quite amazing these new computers are crap. They are built up with crap parts. You would have thought they would of got more reliable as time goes on. I suppose its like the DC3 aircraft which is still more reliable than any brandnew 30 seater turboprop a/c. The DC3 does not have a finite life in landings, age or flying hours because it was designed for reliability it will last for ever.
In April 2000 I bought a Macrocom P111 600 computer and it was fantastic, it come with every thing a person would want. I was proud of my Intel inside emblem and P3 sticker. It worked like a dream toal 100% reliability. It oozed quality. That was until Dec 2002 when my house got hit with lightening. Insurance paid for all the bits in the CPU minus the case. It was a 1200Hz processor, huge HDD double the memory but its ****. Noisy, locks up, every part is crap and is dying.
It must be the same reason as leaky houses crap workmanship and cutting corners, cheap and nasty crap parts, crap post production checks.
