161508 2003-07-20 06:57:00 Hi all
I have 2 machines of which I wish to swap. I basically want to copy everything off the old hardrive to the new one so it will boot up exactly like the old computer and I will not have to re-install any software and adjust any settings. Will this work if I copy every file from the old hard drive to the new one?
Is there software that can do this?
Any help will be much appreciated.
cheers

161509 2003-07-20 07:02:00 Just copying will not do it I am afraid.

You need to use a program such as Nortons Ghost, or Drive Image to take a copy, then restore it on the other PC.

161510 2003-07-20 07:27:00 Just coping does not take hidden system files, but I have done this in the past by slaving the target drive to the one wish to copy from and using xxcopy and switches, do a search on google or check here ( . infinisource . com/features/copy-hd . html" target="_blank">www . infinisource . com) ( I know it says copy data but as I said i have done it and use xxcopy as xcopy is 8 . 3 convention, wheres xxcopy is compatible with long file names switchs are the same) . warning make sure all temp files are cleaned out and do a scandisk also otherwise you will take all problems that may exists on the source to designation disk .

A more reliable way is godfathers method .

Oh godfather it is possible to slave the disk and use drive image to do a disk to disk copy without creating an image file, not sure about Nortons Ghost never used the Norton version, just the one that was freeware before Nortons brought the license

Check your options if I had a choice I would use godfathers method .
if you do not have xxcopy ( which I think is in this location on 98se C:\windows\command) do a search on google for it,

good luck

161511 2003-07-20 07:36:00 What operating system are you using?

It will work with windows 9x, although its a little more than just copying the files over.

161512 2003-07-20 07:39:00 u could swap the hard drives over, or you could network them or leach it form the other drive Patrick 2003 (277)
161513 2003-07-20 08:30:00 most hardrive manafactures provide the software required free on their websites. tweak'e (174)
