161946 2003-07-22 05:43:00 True I am my own spammer!

I go to check my mail this morning and mailwasher shows 3 mails from
my own address to myself. The topics are the usual @#$%.If iclick on the preview it just says that the message is in html, therefore i can't read it anyway. So i hit delete.
Now this has got to be the ultimate weapon for the spanners!
How do they manage to do this and has anyone else had this happen?

161947 2003-07-22 06:01:00 If you look at the details of the message headers you will probably find where it originated from and it just had your address in the From field Jim B (153)

It is very easy, all they do is fake header info e.g. the mail server which the mail is coming from & who is sending it, & there you go, You have Spam coming from your self with out sending it your self :D

I Hope this answer your question :)

161949 2003-07-22 06:53:00 Why do they bother?I mean i've just set up mailwasher to mark for deletion any mail showing my moniker in the from field.
I absolutely never have nor ever will open spam in O/E and if these guys could think of a better way to p.... people off, well i doubt it.
So again what is the point ?
And i'm normally against the death penalty :-)

If I spam myself enough times, will I get rich.

161951 2003-07-22 13:02:00 ...or will I end up abusing myself. Craigb (688)

Only if you buy enough of whatever it is your selling.

161953 2003-07-23 06:10:00 The point is (supposedly) that for every 1000 spams, 15 idiots are going to believe what's for sale and reply.

The cynical view, OTOH, is that a proportion of spam has no real point, and is just there to p... people off and lower the signal-to-noise ratio on the internet; which works to the advantage of all sorts of people from Luddites to opponents of transborder free speech to Govt-owned companies still trying to make a buck out of paper mail :-)

And yes; I've had spam "from myself" too, and even more from rubbish-name@my-isp.net; I said to my-isp, "what about checking the From: address in these emails against your list of legitimate customers? They said they had plans in train to do just that; but I haven't seen it happen yet.

And I wouldn't want them to take out every mail I send to myself, as I feel the need to do the occasional test when the flow of mail (even the spam) dries up, and I suspect their server has fallen over.

161954 2003-07-23 08:09:00 Depends on whether you're into self abuse I suppose Craig.
A little bit never hurt nobody!
