161960 2003-07-22 05:25:00 Hi

I have been having big problems with my modem lately ever since I updated the drivers for it . It is a dynalink 1456VQH-R3 conexant chip . It came wiht my computer . Anyway after updating the modem I have had numerous PC lock ups while the modem is dialling, the inabilty to connect at all to Freenet, it dials, gets to the "verifying user name and password" stage after not freezing (the whole comptuer) waits there for ages and disconnects and either dials again at which point the computer freezes again, or it goes and gives me the Error 650 thing .

When I dial up XTRA and manage to connect, the modem refuses to transfer data, so I cant even sign in to MSN messenger, open my home page etc .

I have lowered the maximum speed of the modem, dialled without dialing tone, made the disconnect if not connected time longer etc .

ANY HELP WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED!!!

THANKS A LOT IN ADVANCE

161961 2003-07-22 05:28:00 Just a few more things...I am using Windows ME, and on my old IBM (1997-model SQ1) using a 33.6k modem, I am able to connect to either ISP's with one dial, minimum delay and no lag. Thanx again fatnakedman (1497)
161962 2003-07-22 05:50:00 Check you have the correct driver for that modem from Dynalink NZ (www.dynalink.co.nz)

You may need to slow the modem down if your phone line are poor quality.

For Win 95 98 ME
Double-click on My Computer, then double-click on Dial-Up Networking.
Right-click on the ISP icon and choose Properties.
Click the Configure button.
Change maximum speed to 38.400
Click the Connection tab.
Click the Advanced button.
In "Extra settings," enter the string. +MS=V34
Click OK to save changes.
Shut down the computer and restart to activate the changes

161963 2003-07-22 07:05:00 Ive always used +ms=v34,1 to slow the modem down. What does the extra ,1 refer to?

161964 2003-07-22 08:56:00 You do not need the 1 just to slow the modem to 33k +MS=v34 does that.
The 1 is the default for Automode

If you put in the full string for additional parameters it is in this format
+MS=<modulation>,<automode>,<Min tx rate>,<max tx rate>,<min rx rate>,<max rx rate>,
Eg. to force V90 and and limit receive and transmit rates it would look like this: +MS=V90,1,21600,33600,28800,40000

Every setting does not have to be put in but if it is left out you still have to add the comma

That is why sometimes you will come across an extra setting like this
+MS=V90,,,,,48000

161966 2003-07-23 05:39:00 Thanx Jim B. My drivers are up to date, and I can connect using the +ms=v34 command. However, I am still getting frequent lock ups when trying to dial. Any solutions? Also is there another command that could speed up the connection?..Wat is the pattern to these so I can get the maximum speed that works.

Thanx again

161967 2003-07-23 06:25:00 If you are getting a freeze when connecting this is likely to be caused by some sort of configuration problem on your computer such as a com port conflict

If you want a faster connection that still works it will require a bit of experimentation
Anytime you add or change the extra settings you will need to restart the computer to activate the new settings

Change the max speed back to 57600
Delete the +MS=V34 from extra settings and restart the computer and try that without any extra settings.

If no good try +MS=V90

Try +MS=V90,,,,,48000 or 46667 or 44000 or 40000 or 38667 as the last number

If no good try +MS=V90,1,21600,33600,28800,40000 or 44000 or 46667 or 48000 as the last number
