161860 2003-07-22 00:22:00 I know this has come up a lot, but I just cannot browse the net from the client PC's.

host - 192.168.0.1 - Win XP Home
Client- 192.168.0.2 - Win XP Home
Client- 192.168.0.3 - Win XP Home

Have set DNS server info on the host, and have primary DNS as 192.68.0.1 on the clients. I have also put the actual ISP DNS server address as secondary DNS on the clients.

I can ping websites (eg.. ping www.bbc.co.uk) successfully, and when browsing, can hit the site and get the page title, and HTML header information, but the pages don't load. It just hangs, with the progress bar halfway.

Host is my laptop, 512Mb Ram, celeron 1.2 Ghz, and clients are new Compaq's, Athalon Xp2000's, with 256Mb.

I do use a Zone Alarm firewall, but A) Client PC addresses are 'trusted' and B) it makes no difference if I shut it down anyway.

Any Ideas? It's a pain in the butt. My staff want to surf dodgy internet sites while they work!

161861 2003-07-22 00:32:00 Forgot to mention - host is using a dynalink ADSL modem via USB . The USB connects directly to the laptop USB port .

The ADSL connection does not have a static address .

Are you using DHCP???

If you are using DHCP that 192.68.0.1 should be on one computer e.g. the host computer (the one which has access to the internet e.g. the one which has the ADSL modem in/near it )

& see if that helps

161863 2003-07-22 01:05:00 Stu -

I have set all three pc's to have a fixed IP address on the LAN - host 192 . 168 . 0 . 1, and the clients are . 2 and . 3

The ADSL connection has an 'obtain IP address automatically' and has pre-set address for DNS .

Cheers,

Shane

One other thing try assigning the ADSL modem (from the LAN side a fixed IP address)

161866 2003-07-22 01:21:00 Pinging all round is fine . The clients can even ping websites and get valid responses through the gateway .

Network browsing seems OK - the clients can browse my shared docs on the laptop host, but i cant browse the shared docs on the client from the host . However, I dont want to do that anyway, just thought it might indicate some sort of error .

161867 2003-07-22 02:16:00 Just bumping this back up because I'm now wailing and gnashing my teeth .

Have spent all day going through MS knowledge base and other stuff and am getting nowhere .

My three computers are all happy to talk to each other, can all ping websites, but only the host can browse the web successfully . Both client machines get halfway through loading a webpage then stop .

Any ideas gratefully received !

161868 2003-07-22 02:24:00 one small thing.....check the size of the browser caches.....they may be set to big. set it to about 40meg.

what about trying a different browser. make sure its a network problem not a browser issue.

161869 2003-07-22 02:41:00 I reset the browser cache to a sensible size, but no good.

I'm pretty sure it isn't a browser issue because I had the same problem at home, with laptop and home PC - I resolved it once, but goddamn if it didn't resurface next time I booted, and never worked again.

I'm considering abondoning ICS and using a proxy. Seems a shame though, because ICS is built in, and should just work. Nobody expects MS software to have glitches, eh? ;o)
