161852 2003-07-21 23:19:00 i've got nearly 2gb of downloaded files..
and i wanna empty some hdd space by putting thse on cd...
but i dont know what ones i should keep and ones that i dont need after installing....
if i put a list here with all my downloaded files, and a ** next to ones that i've got installed...
would someone tell me if i actually need to keep them on my hdd etc
also, HOW do i find out if i dont/do have the program installed..as when i first got the computer, i deleted the programs off the start>>programs list..not from the c: drive..so programs are in there but not on the list..
i just dont wanna have to sift thru alllllllll my folders...

i'm using winxphome

What happens if you need to reformat your hdd etc...?????
So you will need to keep them (e.g. on a CD)

Do you mean you are not sure whether you need to keep the original downloaded .exe etc? One way of finding out whether the .exe is the program or just the installer, is to double click on it. If the Installation dialog box opens up (click cancel), it is safe to move that file onto a CD for safe keeping as it is not the actual program.

In future after an downloaded installer has been run, it is a good idea to move that file into a holding folder which makes it easier to keep track of them.

161855 2003-07-22 07:08:00 The easy solution to this problem is to burn the whole damn lot of them ;-). The cost of the extra 1 or 2 CD's is insignificant compared to the peace of mind of knowing you didnt dump anything.

In future, make sure you rename ALL downloaded files so you know exactly what they are, it might make sense now, but those obscure names wont mean much in 6 months time when you come to reinstall...
