162378 2003-07-23 10:01:00 Just having a we play with a bitsa computer I’ve been given.
I thought I would add a Quantum SIRO1700-A HDD as a slave.
Well, I set the jumper as described and the BIOS recognises it ok.

Problem is Win 98se doesn’t recognise it?

Going to control panel / system / Device Manager I note a “!” by Primary IDE Controller (dual fifo). Clicking on this I get the message “This Device is either not present, not working properly, or does have all the drivers installed.”

Going to upgrade Driver I get the message. “The most suitable driver is already being used”

Anyone point me in the right direction. (ATX motherboard - Win98se OS)

PS is it possible to have incompatible HDD’s?
Primary IDE controller works fine with just the Master?

162379 2003-07-23 10:40:00 What did you set the Quantum to, slave or cable select?. Try resetting the jumpers to one or the other. Another option is to install the Quantum as a master, boot the system with a start up floppy and change to the C:\ drive at the command prompt. If that works, then your drive is probably OK. sinndisco (4059)
162380 2003-07-23 22:16:00 The actual drive works fine as Master when jumpered as such .

When connected as Master I’ve run format from a floppy and scandisk from a floppy and everything reports correctly .

The bit that’s got me licked is that on the black & white start-up screen you get prior to the Windows splash screen the drive is correctly reported as primary slave when jumpered and connected as such .

I haven’t tried Cable Select as I thought you needed a special cable?

I’m wondering about Interrupt allocations and whether something has parked itself in a position that the Primary IDE controller wants for use with this drive???

162381 2003-07-23 22:22:00 When you connect it as a slave drive, what is the Master jumpered too? Sometimes if it is jumpered to seperate drive it wont let the slave be recognised. I can never remember if the standard jumper settings are Master/Single or a seperate setting for each, I have one of each :-S

162382 2003-07-23 23:10:00 Ahhhh, Ian we may be getting warm here .

The Master is a Seagate ST31722A and is jumpered for Master or Stand Alone .

However, the alternatives are Slave, Cable Select, or Master with Non-ATA Slave .

My feeling is that The Quantum is ATA as opposed to Non-ATA but I stand to be corrected on this .

I suppose I could try adding the extra jumper and see what happens???

162383 2003-07-23 23:50:00 Thanks Iain, jumpered the Master for Master & Non-ATA Slave and Windows is all happy.

Another lesson learned.

Thanks again
