162167 2003-07-23 02:56:00 I have a second larger hard drive installed, partitioned and reformatted.
I have Win98SE on C drive along with all my files. How can I clean install Windows and some of my programs on the larger drive, perhaps over several weeks, while still having the smaller C drive for normal use? I don't want to just copy and paste everything as Windows is showing some instability. I would copy and paste only those programs that have important data, once everything else has been done.

The two drives are both Western Digital with FAT32.

162168 2003-07-23 03:10:00 2 ways I know of.

1. Dual Boot with Win2000 or XP

2. Unplug your 1st drive and leave the New one in place and set it to master. Then install Windows onto it as normal. Once done set it back to slave and connect your other drive back up. Then in your Auto exec.bat you can create link to a simple batch file to give you an option as to which drive you want to load windows from.

162170 2003-07-23 04:52:00 Im pretty sure you can use XOSL to Dual-Boot with two Win9x systems on the same machine :-) Chilling_Silently (228)
162171 2003-07-23 05:40:00 Was hoping I didn't have to disconnect everything and open up the system unit but perhaps I do. How do I put a link in the Auto exec bat file? Beaver (1902)
162172 2003-07-23 06:16:00 I dont think you can do that Odin (put a link in autoexec.bat), as when that file is read, the system has already booted from the C: drive. The other drive will be D: say, but when the second Windows was installed on it, it would have been C:, if you see what I mean.

I'd have thought the best way would have been to use a 'simple boot manager program such as the IBM one that used to be bundled with earlier versions of Partition Magic.

I'll do a search and see if it can be downloaded anywhere.

162173 2003-07-23 06:37:00 Well, the New Jersey Institute of Technology site I had in mind for the boot manager has changed some of its pages and it's no longer there.

However on the DOS page, PQBOOT.EXE can be downloaded which is a command line DOS boot manager.

That now makes me think Odin was right after all:)

162174 2003-07-23 07:38:00 Yes I am right (for once anyway) I was one of the people that refused to change fully to windows until I really really had to. I stuck with DOS all the way to win98SE. I used a good little dos based menu called DA51 to choose to boot into either windows or Dos or start any number of dos based games such as Doom, heretic etc.

Up until WinME you could start windows from the Dos prompt using a simple command. C:\Windows\win.exe or D:\Windows\win.exe depending on what drive you had windows installed on.

So all you need to do is have a batch file that gives you an option to choose whether you want the C or D drive installation to load up.

Now as for the actual script you need, my Dos is extremely Rusty can someone post the correct lines of text to get an option to press either 1 or 2 to boot from each drive. It think it went something like:

If%"$"= "1" then goto WinC
If%"$"= "2" then goto WinD

[WinC]
C:\windows\win.exe
end

[WinD]
D:\Windows\win.exe
end

Now as i said I am very rusty can someone who know this please check and correct I know I've left something out but I just can't remember what. I think it has to do with the timer (10 seconds to choose etc)

162175 2003-07-23 08:53:00 I've downloaded PQBOOT.EXE but have no idea what to do with it so will await further developments. I have little experience of DOS and didn't even know how to get from DOS to Windows. But I tell you, if there's a way to choose which drive to boot up without having to open up the system unit and flick a switch, that would be great. And if there is, what will show up on D drive in Windows Explorer while I'm back working in C drive? Beaver (1902)
162176 2003-07-23 10:29:00 Well, cough . . there seems to be a problem using pqboot with a second hard drive, at least there is on my system .

What it is supposed to do, and I used to use it for multibooting between Win95, OS/2, and Win98, a few years ago, is that when you run it from the dos prompt you are supposed to get a choice of which primary partition to boot from, the ones not being booted are then hidden .

When I had these partitions all on one hard drive it did just that, but a little while earlier this evening, I have been trying to use it to boot from my backup hard drive which is set as a slave on the primary IDE controller, and my main hard drive is set as master on the primary IDE .

Pqboot only recognised the master drive, and I havent yet found the answer .

I have also tried Odins batch file, not to boot up with but just to run a couple of programs to test the method .

Now to get a choice of pressing key 1 or key 2 to do one or the other, the DOS command (wait for it) CHOICE is used . So his batch file should start like:
CHOICE/c:12 /t:1,20 Select drive 1 or 2 to boot

/c:12 says the choice is between pressing 1 or 2
/t:1,20 says continue with choice 1 if a key is not pressed after 20 seconds .
Then a message can be added to CHOICE to say what it is doing .

Where he has end, it should be goto end after each command and the final end should be :end

His [ ] brackets are 'normally' replaced with a colon, : but I dont think that matters the brackets should work .

The wee problem I had is a syntax error in each of the lines following the choice command . . . blast I cant think what is wrong . . . but I'll work on it .

Also I'll look for a good free simple boot manager as well .

Maybe others have their favourite boot manager they can recommend?
