162071 2003-07-22 10:42:00 Hi, hope someone can help.
I am after a device driver for a PC General monitor for W98se
Model : PCG 1569E. It is a 15" CRT.

I have tried a couple of US driver search sites with no luck and W98 will only let me run 256 colours max. with a nvidia GeForce2 MX 100\200 card with latest driver.

Any help appreciated. Pete.

162072 2003-07-22 10:57:00 It wont be lack of a monitor driver that is limiting the number of colours to 256, it's something to do with your video card driver.
A monitor driver basically only tells Windows what resolution and refresh rate the monitor is capable of.

You are very unlikely anyway to get a "PC General" driver, as they didnt make monitors, they are re-badged monitors from the cheapest possible sources, one reason why PC General was unreliable and went bung.

Choose a "standard" monitor from the Win98 list eg a plug and play monitor. and check out your video card driver(s)/software to make sure you have the right one.

162073 2003-07-22 11:11:00 PC General might have been generally unreliable - but I have a Cyrix 486DX50-2 that still goes (retired) and the associated 15inch monitor from 1994 that has been used all the time - it has seen Windows 3.11, Win98, Redhat 6.0, 6.2, 7.0, 7.3 and now 9.0. Had a service to re-solder some connections recently but still has a great picture. JohnD (509)
162074 2003-07-22 12:03:00 Are you sure it is a PC General PC as they have not been around since the 486 era. mikebartnz (21)
162075 2003-07-22 12:17:00 As far as drivers are concerned you might like to try CTX as I have successfully used this with my "PC General" monitor. The only problem I ever had with my General was the floppy controller died after five years of abuse.

A motherboard upgrade from a pentium to a celeron and it is still giving me excellent service.

162076 2003-07-23 08:40:00 Definitely PC General 486 bought in 1994. Not 100% sure but htink that they might have produced 386s too?? JohnD (509)
162077 2003-07-23 11:17:00 Thanks Terry for your insight of what a monitor driver does\does not do.
I downloaded an earlier driver and it works fine.
The PC General machine has a replacement motherboard in it - I was just trying to get it going for a friend who knows less than me!

Thanks to all for the replys. Pete.
