162412 2003-07-24 08:53:00 It reserves an amount of HDD space for use as a Swap File.

It will reserve a dynamic amount (with a minimum size if specified) and will increase the size only when it needs to. If you set a maximum size as well, it will give an error if it requires a swap file larger than specified.

The reasons for specifying a maximum size are often to avoid the Page File from dynamically changing filesize and momentarily using resources while this occurs. Its really not an issue for "normal" PC use, just let Windows handle it automatically.

162413 2003-07-25 11:16:00 in virtual memory windows-under page file size for selected drives.(drive c). i ticked the custom size-in initial size (MB) i typed in 512 then i clicked on the set button. a system control panet window appeared and asked me to enter a numeric value for the maximum page file size. ( i thought i should not set the maximun size value !)
under total paging file size for all drives is setted.--minimum allowed 2MB--currently allocated 0MB.

what should i do now ?

thank you.

162414 2003-07-25 11:34:00 The recommended memory size for virtual memory is twice the amount of the RAM you have. ie if you have 256MB of RAM then set it for 512 sinndisco (4059)
162415 2003-07-25 11:46:00 should i set the maximun size value too ? i have 1g of ram so what sort of valum i should set it to ( sorry to ask)
thank you.

162416 2003-07-25 11:54:00 Your minimum is 2MB as your settings has already indicated, the maximum should then be 1024 x 2 which = 2048MB or around 2 gigs.

I got a headache, and I need a sleep. back tomorrow.

162417 2003-07-25 12:10:00 chinadoll, it will work fine if you simply select "system managed size" and press "set". Then reboot when it asks you.
Then it will auto-adjust, and you will not need to worry about it again.

162418 2003-07-25 12:19:00 thank you i will do that. and good night! chinadoll (682)
162419 2003-07-25 22:37:00 Just to explain things a bit clearer to others, and this doesn't really apply to chinadoll as he/she has 1G of Ram

By setting a minimum size your telling windows that there MUST always be the minimum size, now if you set this at a reasonable amount, lets say 200MB in a 256MB RAM system, then when you actually start using the paging file the computer will not start changing the size of the file as its already set at 200MB, this results in a quicker response time and less "chugging"
