162177 2003-07-23 14:14:00 See I Told you I was rusty :D In fact programing or writing scripts was never my forte. I let my brother write them and then I would alter and edit to suit myself.

There are a number of different ways to get the option to choose to appear, so thanks Terry for testing out my poor recollection of DOS command scripts :D I knew it wasn't quite right as I think I mixed several versions of DOS and a few windows commands as well. :-)

162178 2003-07-23 21:51:00 Whoa, you guys are leaving me behind. I don't have the knowledge to keep up. If you find the right piece of software, please tell me the steps required to use it. Beaver (1902)
162179 2003-07-23 23:24:00 Yes thats what I will try to do, if there is a good boot manager even if DOS based then it will be easy to use with a few instructions, dont worry.

This may take a day or two, busy at the moment, but some else too is almost certain to suggest a good program to use.

Cheers

162180 2003-07-23 23:36:00 Thanks, Terry. Much appreciated. Beaver (1902)
162181 2003-07-24 00:47:00 This is maybe too simple for the boffins, but why not install new drive as Master - existing as Slave - boot from A drive boot disc, and then change to CD and type set-up. This will give you a clean install of Windows for a start. Then comes the fun part of seeing what you can transfer across - all files etc will be OK - a lot of progs will need original disks or should run OK from the slave.

162182 2003-07-24 01:16:00 The choice command uses the errorlevel too return your choice.

if %errorlevel% = 1 goto whatever

162183 2003-07-24 01:41:00 The thing is, I was hoping to do it gradually as it will be time consuming. There's also the potential for mistakes I can't easily undo and I'm no expert. Furthermore, while it's all going on, I can't use the computer normally. Still, if I can't find a way to do it bit by bit, I might have to do it in one go and hope for the best so thanks for your input. Beaver (1902)
162184 2003-07-24 04:28:00 This bit is for ugh1 and Odin:
Thanks ugh1, thats almost dead right, enabled me to make the right connection, I was going down the wrong track .
In principle this is a batch file to chose between a program on either partition c: or partition d: (for partitions also read drives)

@echo off
choice Do you want to boot from your slave drive

IF errorlevel 2 d:\windows\win . com

IF errorlevel 1 c:\windows\win . com

``````````
Very simple, the only problem is we are back to square 1 like as when I queried with Odin whether that method would work .
It cant because to reach the stage of running this batch file the primary drive has already booted and loaded and started to load its IO . sys etc .
I tested this out by having a primary master with Win98SE (+DOS7), and a primary slave with DOS 6 . 22 +Win3 . 11, and running the above batch file, and told it to start win3 . 11 . After a lot of coughing and spluttering with the system trying to make up its mind which win . com it should run, it reverted to the Win98 one .
I have found these free boot manager programs Beaver, there will be others including Ranish, all of varying complexity, I havent checked them out but OSL2000 looks good with lots of info and FAQS on the web page .
OSL200 ( . downloadsafari . com/download . asp?address=OSL2000%20Boot%20Manager8 . 6" target="_blank">www . downloadsafari . com)
XOSL (http://www . xosl . org/) already mentioned .
And from Simtel DOS archives scroll down to get bootm020 . zip and click on it:
ftp://ftp . simtel . net/ . 2/simtelnet/msdos/bootutil/
or just click on this:
ftp://ftp . simtel . net/ . 2/simtelnet/msdos/bootutil/bootm020 . zip
162185 2003-07-24 04:55:00 You guys are getting a bit heavy - Beaver has stated that he is relative newbee. Ranish is a cow to use & wouldn't help.
Beaver
Have you tried a re-install of W98 which might help with your problems? Just over the top so that you don't lose anything.
I also assume that your D drive is allready installed and running OK.
You can Install a new copy of W98 onto this, and then go into Bios & have it boot from D to make sure it is OK. If so change over and make it your master. This does involve getting into the box and changing one jumper. Then in Bios revert back to boot from C.
162186 2003-07-24 05:44:00 I read somewhere recently that a clean install is better than reinstall for fixing problems so I thought that since I have now cleaned out D drive (which was working fine as a place to put extra programs and documents), I should grab the opportunity to get Windows right.
How do I install a new copy of it on D drive?
Beaver is a she, by the way...
