162444 2003-07-23 16:55:00 My 450 P3, 512, 20 GB, XP Pro works well enough for most day to day needs but I find Photoshop 7.1 takes forever for some tasks. Other imaging programs are very slow, too.
I don't play much games (apart from when the nephews stay over) and sound isn't too important. Digital imaging is the most important thing. I already have scanner and printer but need new CD-RW.
What should I be looking for?
Any recommendations for Hamilton area PC builder?

162445 2003-07-23 19:11:00 For digital imaging and photo renderings etc then I'd have to recommend going with the Intel Pentium 4. While I do prefer the AMD cpu's, digital imaging and video encoding is one of the few things that the pentium 4 does out perform AMD. Also try and get more and faster RAM.

You can get a Pentium 4 2.4 ghtz Cpu for about $324 (refer pricespy.co.nz for the prices) as for the motherboards well i don't know much about the intel ones as I have been more interested in the AMD ones. However I'm sure someone else here will point you in the right direction.

162446 2003-07-23 22:51:00 if you want to save money get one 2nd hand off trademe.co.nz anything over 800 MHZ is fine you may even be even able to use your existing ram, get something with a 32 meg AGP graphics card in it and seperate soundcard if possible.
everyone is always upgrading so PCs are very cheap and powerful, they are rotten investments though as they depreciate faster than a car does .

AMDs are good value eg in your area for around $600
