| 162078 | 2003-07-22 11:06:00 | Hi PROBLEM: Cannot seem to properly establish connectivity between ME(client) and XP SP1(host), and other issues:( CURRENT STATUS: Host cannot ping client by IP address (request timed out), and not by name either. Client on Windows ME, can ping host by workgroup name but not by current IP address(192.168.0. 2) Host cannot "see" client in 'other users in this workgroup.' Client can intermittently "see" host on his comp(unsure why it changes) Says Lan connection enabled. Internet is dial-up and client cannot access internet if host connected to it. BACKGORUND TO PROBLEM: Recently purchased new comp, with XP (SP1) installed, and am NEW:O to networking and this operating system, having come from Windows 98. Firstly I used networking wizard, which finished, but apart from reconfiguring settings, no success. Thought I would try to manually configure - followed Microsoft's knowledge base instructions for host and client, which included assigning static IP addresses, subnet, default gateway etc..enabling ICS plus plus (did this on client computer also.). When this didnt solve my problem, I tried to troubleshoot but became even more befuddled:) so flagged that idea. I have also read many sites and applied their instructions trying to find a solution, including FAQ. Obviously, I'm doing somit wrong :(( I (host)had to change settings back to automatically assign IP and DNS, otherwise was unable to connect to internet. QUERY: Do you good techies and alike have any ideas on how to fix ? with thanks |

| 162083 | 2003-07-23 02:28:00 | Have you tried setting the TCP/IP Protocol for each Adapter, (under Properties) to obtain an IP Address Automatically. And then re-run the ICS Wizard on your XP Host PC. A re-boot on each PC should be performed prior to running the wizard again. . I presume that you have both the PC's connected by either a crossover LAN cable, or that they are both connected via a Ethernet Switch/hub |

Set your own IP address eg 192.168.0.2 2. Set your Subnet 255.255.255.0 3. Turn OFF the XP firewall (that always causes hassles with Home networking) 4. Remove QoS that also causes issues 5. Right click My Computer (XP machine) and then properties then click on Network Identification then click the properties button. Make sure the computer has a name and is in the same workgroup as the ME machine. This of course should be done before using the wizard. Once the wizard has been run I have found it extremely difficult to convince XP to let me set my own settings. On the ME machine you can find the workgroup name by right clicking on the Network neighbourhood (or My Network) Icon and choosing properties. Set the IP address for that as well eg 192.168.0.3 |

Ok, I'm not sure how to describe the cabling that I'm using - so will wait til "the one who knows about those things" to get home from work, before I comment further . Also, I will follow the steps as instructed here to try and resolve . cheers! |
