| 162602 | 2003-07-26 23:58:00 | I used to get a similar problem on dialup, with the added point of interest that it seemed to happen on the hour...not every hour but a lot of them. That's on the hour by my own PC clock. The ISP's first suggestion is that I might have something else that I'd forgotten about running every hour either in the PC or on the phone network (eg burglar alarm polling). My answer; "nothing that I installed". It went away when I changed to another ISP; then three weeks later, it came back again with the new outfit. Went away again when I changed to cable, but still occasionally returns (eg, it happened yesterday at 8am on the dot, and service did not resume until 8:03). I'd be fascinated to get a final answer to this; I can't help suspecting it's something gathering info periodically from my machine, through a cookie or something similar, for either marketing or law-enforcement purposes. Yes, I tried AdAware and similar filters; when it was happening frequently, it didn't clear it. Now, as I say, it's only very occasional, and I'd put it down to normal network flakiness - if it didn't happen on the hour exactly. Any explanation occurs to anyone? Steve B. |
