2003-07-25 11:01:00 | Hi guys,a friend has given me his PC(as above) because it won't start. You turn it on and the Win 98 splash screen comes on,with the little blue lines marching across the bottom, but this only lasts for about 3 or 4 of those blue lines going across, then they stop dead. The computer freezes and wont go any further.I have reinstalled windows from the recovery disc,(not a format and install,as I am trying to keep his data if I can, just a reload at the moment)but with no luck as yet.Any suggestions?I have also turned off everything in MSconfig that is loading on startup, but still no joy. Please help! Thanks Peter

2003-07-25 11:06:00 | Can you get into safe mode at all? If you can't I think you're in trouble. Is your main data on a second partition (not the windows one)?? If it isn't thats an idea for next time. Then you can just full-reinstall the OS. What were you doing prior to this malfunction? If others can't come up with anything, then perhaps your best option would be to put the hard drive in another machine, as slave and copy all your files. I know computer repair shops let you have that option.

2003-07-25 11:15:00 | Hi,it works fine in safe mode,so I figured it has to be a software problem. As it is loading something right at the start, there is something it doesn't like, but what, and how do I fix it without formating.I will if I have to but I would like to save his data if I can.He said that one of his flatmates downloaded something called "Virtual Girl"the day before, but I have removed all ot I can find, and still nothing. | Peter Coleman (597) | |

2003-07-25 11:21:00 | Lol, well you are going to need to go start -> run -> msconfig (in safe mode). Stop any dodgy programs from starting up in there. Also from safe mode you can uninstall any programs via add/remove in Control Panel. So you could try removing the offending program from there, or maybe delete the directory it was installed into.

2003-07-25 11:25:00 | problem is, I can't back it up.I can't get his floppy drive to work either | Peter Coleman (597) | |
2003-07-25 11:26:00 | Reboot and press the "esc" key when the splash screen appears. You might be able to see what is going on in behind the splash screen when the system halts. My A+ book tells me that your system is having problems trying to load a virtual device driver. (A VXD file) and that you are experiencing a Windows Protection error. | sinndisco (4059) | |

2003-07-27 11:03:00 | Thanks Sinndisco, you put me on the right track. After hitting "esc",it came up with all sorts of stuff about a file"au10dos.com",and had me completley stumped for a while. Finally figured this must be the problem file, found it and deleted it and bongo, away it went.I like you ,very smart chappie,eh.Well thanks alo, everything going all fine now, except his floppy drive doesn't seem to work, but thats another problem altogether, for some other time,I think. Thanks again for all the help guys Peter

2003-07-27 11:11:00 | au10dos.com is a dos soundcard driver. It has a problem with some antivirus programs. Its likely you don't need dos sound support anyway, so should be fine.
