| 163119 | 2003-07-27 01:48:00 | Unlike Geoffd Palmer I had a strggle to get win modems to work scanmodem produced all sorts of info much of which seemed usless. it told me I needed a version with 686 extension which doesn't seem to exist and then something about compiling one from source code. However I installed the 586 version which seem sto work ok eeeeventually getting a connectoin to the internet (KPPP) was not installed during the setup process but after installing set itself with the modem DEV etc. Setting it up for Paradise.net and discovering it has the Wellington only phone number I have tried all manner of options to get connected, lengthing timeouts seems to have cured most problems. I can now connect to the isp but get the error "PPPD died unexpectedly" then the connection terminates. Searching for PPPD in the help file revealed a couple of tests but I was unable to fully determine wether or not PPPD is installed and if not how to do so. any assistance in making this last step to get connected would be greatly appreciated as many hours have so far been wasted Other installation hicups I have are 1)no sound 2)hard drives do not show up in konquerer windows under devices as do CD,zip and floppy drives I can access them by finding them under /root/mnt etc but this isn't very efficient |

| 163120 | 2003-07-27 03:09:00 | Howdy Ross, If you access the Mandrake Control Centre (this should ask you for the root pasword) and go to the Software portion. In there is an option to Remove/Install packages. By looking at the remove section this will give you a list of all packages already installed. The Mandrake Control Centre also has an area where you can check the log files. Generally this will give you the information about why the Point To Point Daemon died. This area will also have a hard ware section where you can possibly determine why you have no sound. Why do you want to access the hard drive? What are you attempting to achieve? If you are wanting to look at what files and programs are on the hard drive you can use the "Quick Browser" in the start menu area. |

I did know about the quick browser but its not as quick as clicking on a drive in konquerer. I thought of changing the mount point do /dev or /mnt where the floppy, cd etc are. Tryed the supermount parameter once seemed to have a nasty result (if it aint broke dont fix it !!) it did show the drives in devices in konquerer but could not boot after next restart. |
