I was having random reboots so I took my machine to PB Tech to check it out. They came up with a power supply which was giving varying voltage and a faulty hard drive (although scan disc doesn’t pick up any faults). I got them to replace the power supply and they advised me to get rid of the faulty hard drive and use my second 20 GB hard drive (Drive D) as my one and only master drive. This brings me to some questions:

1. Do I need to completely remove my faulty hard drive (Drive C) or just disable it – how do I do this??
2. How do I change my slave drive (drive D) to a master drive??
3. Once I remove or unplug the faulty drive (which contains Windows 98) and install win98 on Drive D will I loose any current data/programs installed on Drive D.

Thanks for any help
Cheers
Nath

163052 2003-07-26 11:44:00 Firstly, changing a drive from slave to master (or visa versa) requires the jumpers resetting on the drive itself, little links you pull out and move to other contacts. Where and which ones depends on the drive itself, usually there is a diagram of the jumper layout on the drive itself. As for reinstalling Windows, you shouldn't lose any data when you do the install unless those files are in a folder called "Windows". Just dont format the disk before the install. Oh yeah, the reason why drives are masters and slaves is due to all drives having the Primary IDE controller built into drive itself instead of on the PC, and the PC can only have one IDE controller, setting the 2nd drive to slave merely disables the onboard IDE controller. sinndisco (4059)
163053 2003-07-27 04:36:00 You can leave the disk in ... just unplug its data and power cables. You may find that you will remove it anyway ... you usually have to take a drive out to change the jumpers and your bad one will (Murphy's Law) be in the way :D Graham L (2)
163054 2003-07-28 11:17:00 Gidday, I managed to unplug the so called damaged drive and make the other my master drive, but my system still did a random reboot. I talked again to PB tech and they said although I have removed the probable source of the problem (power supply) other hardware may be damaged - so maybe the varying power supply damaged my motherboard??
Would be hard to replace that for my old P2-350.

cheers
