163529 2003-07-29 00:12:00 just a little question,

spybot is running fine, but when i am watching it go through the checks etc and it says which file its checking it comes up with files of programs ive uninstalled or deleted and some also have not idea how it got on their, but it does not see any problems in these files?

i thought when you uninstalled something it was gone or renamed so cannot be found?
one thing i have noticed it comes up hotbar ? thats that spyware thing that is a bar (like a google bar) and it bypasses it as ok ? i though it would have spat the dummy at it why does it not?

every thing seems to be running fine (touch wood) at the moment, (just normal mouse probs) but just a little confused on this spybot function.

is it a normal occurance?
and does this mean its working ok?
i have not set it to miss anything that i know of, does it have a setting to avoid certain files?

must check it out a bit deeper i feel. when the brain is working, :D

thanxs

sorry about silly question, probably been done to death this one already.

163530 2003-07-29 00:48:00 Those programs are not necessarily installed, I think that is what spybot is looking for in your pc it will also list/scan registry keys if you set spybot up to do so (cant remember if this is a default setting).
Hope this answers your question.

163531 2003-07-29 00:54:00 what do you mean by the registry keys i thought it scanned your whole computer anyway?

is this wrong ? does it only scan certain parts wheather by default or preset settings you made?

i feel better now thinking it is looking for these items not actually saying they are there on my puter.
obviously id miss read it at some stage and thought it was actually scanning things already on my puter, not actually looking to see if they were / are their?

163532 2003-07-29 01:20:00 You can change what is being scanned ie registry keys yes/ no or files ie cookies, If I remeber correctly all these are scaned by default unless you change the scanning defaults, also check the other options within spybot it can stop your home page from being hijacked /changed by another site. beama (111)
163533 2003-07-29 01:31:00 under the help section i take it?

>settings ? i get lost there.. may have some more indepth study of it later, im presuming its at default setting as i have not altered anything for it to scan at this stage, as that seemed the safest option for me...

but would like to find out what settings it has set and wheather they are acceptable or need to be a little more advanced in their settings level but that is a ongoing project i see for me, to learn how to use all programs installed on my puter in the future and to be understood a bit furthor.
at the moment its not to big a deal as it works so i m not gonna touch it... if it aint broke dont touch it!

thanxs

163534 2003-07-29 06:43:00 Hi Beetle

To stop Spybot from scanning the registry open up the program in Advanced Mode and click on Settings > File sets. Remove the tick from beside "System Internals". If you click on Help with the File sets page displayed, and then on the "System Problems" link you will get more specific information including this:
Quote:"Warning: Please be aware that changes to this items can corrupt your system! If you are not sure whether a setting is really a problem, better leave it alone! Especially Microsoft Office™ has some registry entries pointing the wrong directories and some even pointing to non-existent help files. I've changed the first, but I wouldn't delete the second kind of, because they may well point to files that will be installed on that "Install on first use" base."

Basically what it is telling you is that if you let Spybot scan the registry, you have to be very careful in selecting what items to allow it to fix. If you want to clean up the registry, a more specific registry cleaner program should probably be used, that has a more user friendly guidance built into it.
