163246 2003-07-27 09:56:00 Has anybody tried Debian from the APC magazine? Frank Deacon (4318)
163247 2003-07-28 04:28:00 Briefly. I had trouble with partioining (the partitions mande by a previous Mandrake). Of course I rushed it, and didn't do it properly. :D

I've got it booting to black screen command mode, overlapping the LCD display.

I'm going to zap it. There are more friendly distributions. It's really for enthusiasts. I like Linux, but I also like rpms.

163248 2003-08-13 11:29:00 Yes, I've tried it, but the installation didn't go quite right. The first confusion was whether to "upgrade glibc" or not (I tried both), but the major disappointment was that it didn't install x-windows. Definitely asked it to, using tasksel, but no success. Tried more than once.

A friend had the same problem, different computer, but still no x-windows bit.

Basically it works though, I can log in at the command line, but no response to "startx" or various other relevant commands. Anyone have an idea what is wrong please?

163249 2003-08-13 22:57:00 Im with rumpty...

I forgot that you can use tasksel though, so I might reboot into it again tonight.

The Text-only installer is rather cumbersome to use, but it could be worse....

Its just not as clear-cut as RedHat's installer, which is very GUI'd up, looks a treat, and does the job well :-)

Im still gonna press on with Debian though, as I have a 300Mhz sitting around I'd like to install it on, as Debian certainly seem's more customisable than RH is!

163250 2003-08-14 02:29:00 The first time I downloaded and tried to install Debian was the last time I laid eyes on it. But don't blame Debian, I didn't take the time to read the instructions carefully and didn't interpret those destructions into what I should have done. I'll get back into Debian, but after I figure out if it's possible to 'hack' the ROM on my router to run Apache Server instead of their built-in server, who knows, I may not need a webserver after all :P Kame (312)
