163480 2003-07-29 04:54:00 Also agreed Roofus, the residual unbalance of the fans is magnified by the springiness of cpu mounting and motherboard, leading to resonances, flimsy cases etc. They dont balance small fans, but rely on the manufacturing accuracy and centering of the spindle axis. With larger case fans like 120mm, the more expensive ones will have balancing notches cut into the blade tips, but not the cheaper ones.

Mechanical resonance noise could be reduced possibly by judicious internal bracing, or screwing heavier plate inside the case walls and also mounting fans on heavier metal plates to reduce the frequency. Rubber mounting could also be tried.

Bearing noise transmission is another source.

In the end, it's a matter of doing the best with what one has.

163481 2003-07-29 09:11:00 Or you could have a mini speaker inside your computer emitting pink noise that would/could counter balance the fan noise roofus (483)
163482 2003-07-29 09:52:00 You don't mention which shop one gets the mini fan from. Thomas (1820)
163483 2003-07-29 09:53:00 Sorry mini speaker. Thomas (1820)
163484 2003-07-29 10:03:00 Even better Roofus, use the computer to analyse and produce anti-phase sound via the sound card. Of course cpu usage could be up to 100% to do that in real time. A pink noise generator would just add to the bedlam.

163485 2003-07-29 10:29:00 Perhaps if you used artificial time you wouldn' use so much of cpu.;)
Amazing what goes on in ones head;)

163486 2003-07-29 11:04:00 My "Tin Box" has got three fans in it & was quite noisy. Took the fan units out & cleaned the blades, Much better. Look at your house cooling fan to see how much dirt sticks to the blade edges.
Considered playing soothing music off your M/c whilst you are working?

163487 2003-07-29 12:34:00 Correct Poppa J, thanks for the music tip. Sure to help. Just like what Roofus told us a few posts ago.

Re: Fans and noise
Everyone always looks to the fans when trying to reduce the noise of their PC, however a bit of insulation also wouldn't help. Cases are cheaper today than they were a couple of years ago for a couple of reasons, one of them been that they are less vibration resistant and less noise reducant

So we dont need to bother with insulation? and the cases are less noise 'reducant'.. good show, but I'm confused. Can anyone find that in any dictionary..

163488 2003-07-29 13:06:00 Sure,if the correct spelling is used.

reducent

163489 2003-07-29 13:08:00 and the cases are less able to reduce noise...perhaps.

No such word as reducant,or at least not in the shorter Oxford dictionary;)

You could do as I have done and make cabinet to sit box etc in,that reduces the sound.
