163328 2003-07-27 19:52:00 Hi guys ^^

In PC World issue Dec2001/Jan2002, it said something about AMD claims that an AthlonXp1600+ would probably perform/deliver more speed than a P4 1 . 6Ghz . And AthlonXp1700+ would do the same with a P4 1 . 7Ghz and so on . . . . So I was wondering, now with AthlonXp 2000+,2400+,2500+2600+ and the 3000+ out on the market is that statement/theory (I really don't know what to call it) still true/believable? The reason being, is I'm deciding to buy a new comp soon . Right now I'm deciding to get a P42 . 4Ghz FSB533mhz but with its price at $350(inc gst) . . . I'm kinda deciding to buy a AthlonXp 2500+ for $200(inc gst) . So if that statement/theory is still true, wouldn't buying an AthlonXp2500+ worth its cost? Or is there a string attach to it?

So any suggestions on which CPU (P42 . 4Ghz or Xp2500+) is better to get for its price?

Thanks alot

163329 2003-07-27 23:49:00 You must realise that the AMD Athlon XP + Processor line is not actually the Ghz speed many think, so my AMD Athlon XP 1700+ operates at 1.46Ghz

I ran a test converting 2.2Gigs of MP3's (Batch conversion with no user intervention required) and my AMD Athlon XP 1700+ beat a friends 1.6Ghz P4 by a minute or two (it took a couple of hours to do approx 40hours of Music!).

Both have Strengths and Weaknesses in certain areas, but IMHO, it is not likely to be terribly noticable to the majority of End-Users out there... Im willing to bet that for a lot of people their processors rarely reach maximum potential.. I know my processor sits at 2% all day playing music etc... With browser windows open, vnc, hosting FTP, and a few other things, it still only reaches around 9-10% usage!

I dont however have any concrete tests on hand to show you the performance differences.

What are you going to be primarily using the PC for would be a good question to ask, so reply to that and people may be able to help you a little more, due to each processor performing differently in different areas of computing :-)

Hope this helps

163330 2003-07-28 07:17:00 I'm going to use it for mainly for games like Unreal 2, UT 2003 BF1942 and hopefully be able to run Doom3 with 1Gig of DDR333(with my Radeon9000Pro128DDR help of couse( :( ). I'm also going to use it for photo/image editing and some graphic design too, like CAD, Pro Desktop etc. Also converting large video files. Is a P4 2.4Ghz too much for my needs? Jase1 (459)
163331 2003-07-28 07:32:00 I would suggest you then go with the AMD processor and use the extra money to upgrade to a Raedon 9700Pro :-)

That is more likely to be a bottleneck for your system over processor speed.

163332 2003-07-28 08:29:00 Thanks alot for your suggestion ^^ , I'll do that. So its AthlonXp 2500+ ^^ . Jase1 (459)
163333 2003-07-28 09:00:00 If you want to get the best preformance out of your new athlon then grab a nForce 2 board while ur at it and grab a dual channel ram kit while ur at it. One bottleneck on the athlon is the memory bandwidth, one way around this is by using the dual channel feature on the nForce and using two stick or ram as opposed to 1(since your gonna have 1024 then im guessing its 2 sticks of RAM neway). Before buyin for the purpose of running them in dual channel mode it pays to check they will actually run in dual channel mode e.g same size, brand, speed e.t.c. One way around this is to buy a dual channel kit from one of the bigger name RAM manufactuers e.g Corsair, Mushkin or Kingston.

You can also reduce the memory bottleneck by increasing the FSB e.g from 166MHz to 200Mhz(also known as overclocking but should be obtainable on a barton with very lil vcore adjustment thus eliminating much of the chance of damaging the core), anything around or over 200MHz is generally concidered the sweetspot for the athlon and gives the best preformance. With the new nForce boards they multiplier unlock the CPU so drop your multiplier and up your FSB this is goning to give u a good preformance increase without costing that much, it may help to buy some good quality PC3200 thou. Although any brand of PC3200 should hit 200mhz easy.
