163314 2003-07-27 21:34:00 The hardest task you will have in installing a new hard drive is finding one that is 20GB. Otherwise, it is a matter of plugging it in, partitioning and formatting it and away you go. No need for a new computer just yet.

Have a little search on Google for "installing new hard drive" and you will find lots of good info.

163315 2003-07-27 21:49:00 Couple of things you could do.

1. See if there is a bios update that will allow you to install a larger drive
(be careful when updating a bios one wrong move and the system is toast)

2. Get a bigger drive and get the drive Overlay software (this allows you to use large capacity drives on older machine that normally won't run them). You can get the overlay software from the drive manufacturer.

163317 2003-07-28 11:57:00 A new hard drive would be your best bet ... wouldn't even have to throw the old one out, just keep it as your Master and make the new one your Slave ...

One of the upsides to this is that you can put Windows on the smaller drive and keep ALL your data on the other ... if you need to reinstall Windows you only have to format the smaller drive, without freaking out that you'll lose everything, since it's on a separate drive ...

Since you're already running a 10GB hard drive, your BIOS should be alright (older ones couldn't read anything bigger than 2 or 8 GB, depending on the brand). As it is, even if your BIOS baulks at reading the new HD due to it's size, making several smaller partitions on it (say, about 4G each) should solve that prob too ...

The way things are going, a 40GB might be better value for money than a 20GB HD anyway ... Cheers ... Rosz

163318 2003-07-29 02:40:00 preferably you would use the newer drive to hold windows, as it would have a fast seek time, and transfer rate. roofus (483)
