1318977 2012-12-19 08:36:00 In my younger days there was an official offence called "car conversion". This was to cover instances where a car was "borrowed" for the night (converted for the offender's use) and the police recovered it the next day. It was less serious than if the car had been permanently stolen.

if you download a song / movie / TV episode, then the original is still there

What then, do you call it if you get on a train and dodge the fare ?? You benefit, it's unlikely anyone else misses out on transport, but the provider loses revenue.
If EVERYONE did it, there would be no trains.

It's all a matter of scale.

It's all a matter of scale.a bit like the difference between benefit fraud and tax evasion. IRD never had the money in the first place so it can't be theft

1318979 2012-12-19 10:44:00 a CD that contains DRM cannot legally be labelled as a CDDA (compact disc digital audio) as it contains software on it. I have successfully argued this in store when returning one many years ago after it wouldn't play on a computer.
That is well worth knowing and well done for argueing the point.

That argument might work in the likes of England but not here because the trains hardly ever run here. Try getting a train from Wellington to the Wairarapa on a weekend.

Try getting on the train in general! Buses again last week due to the level crossing at matarawa being cut up.

1318982 2012-12-19 20:16:00 I don't want to have a duplicate of professional media .

What I want is media without regional encoding, and without DRM, both of which infringe my freedom to use the material as I choose, be that in the past, the present or the future .

So that's what I get, media without the regional encoding, and without the DRM . So it's not strickly a copy, since the original product had been spoilt before it left the factory, and I've got an improved product instead .

The software and media companies are remarkable for the 2-3 decades of which they have foisted on us buggy, faulty, incomplete or crippled products, and expect us to lap it up happily and to pay them handsomly, and repeatedly .

I agree with you .

But what would you think is a fair price for one song as you describe
What would would think is a fair price for a digital CD or Album as you describe .

No physical media, but top quality, and yours forever .

And you have to promise not to ever lend it to anyone or "share it"

If you catch the 2 scheduled trains, generally no problem.

I think $1 to $1.50 would be fair

1318985 2012-12-19 21:17:00 Here's an amusing tidbit . Remember when the last attempt at copy protecting CDs made some of them unable to play or rip on PCs . Without ever mentioning it Microsoft at some point seem to have given media player the ability to ignore that protection and do it anyway .

Copy protected CD's won't play in my previous Car Player, or my home CD players(Marantz & Philips), ie wont play in some Euro designed/based CD players . In fact Philips tried to stop these being called 'compact disks' as they didnt meet the CD 'spec' .
So in order for these to work, for me, I had to make copies & remove the copy protection . Yet that would be illegal .
The chances of me getting a refund for these out of spec copy protected 'CDs'= zero .

Not to mention Sony adding rootkit installers to music CD's a few years back . . . what a disaster that was .
As to bands encouraging there music to be copied . . . they often dont own the publishing?? rights so the band has no right to encourage that sort of thing .

But in the end, how is listening to music & watching TV programs on youtube somehow not as bad as downloading/pirating ??
Youtube is riddled with copyright infringement , just as bad as what dot . com got reamed for .

Ken

Is that for one song or for a whole albums worth?
