| 1318250 | 2012-12-14 08:52:00 | Hi Team, I am looking at replacing my car. I have found two cars which are very similar in price range and I would like your thoughts on them: Car 1: Ford Focus MY08 2008 51,000 Kms 5DR hatchback Automatic (Tiptronic) 2.0L Petrol Car 2: Honda Civic S (sport) 2008 71,000 Kms 4DR sedan Automatic 1.8L Petrol Both cars are in excellent condition, been mechanically checked and have full service records (ex-lease). I have looked at them both and can't make my mind up which one to get (or attempt to get). I need to make a decision by tomorrow morning as they both go up for auction. Any comments on these two cars? Thanks. :) This one... (mine) |

| 1318252 | 2012-12-14 18:50:00 | In the October 2012 issue of Consumer they had an article on buying a new car. They assessed the most popular models that people buy. They assessed 24 small cars, 19 medium size cars and 23 lifestyle SUVs. In the small car class they choose the Honda Jazz, Mazda 2, Daihatsu Sirion and Suzuki Swift. In the medium class cars they choose the Mazada 3, Ford Focus, Honda Civic Euro, Hyundai i30, Toyota Corolla and Subaru Impreza. Life Style SUVs they choose the Mazda CX5, Hyundai Santa Fe and the Toyota RAV4. These are in no particular order of preference. :) |

He has now clocked up 380000km with it and only had a split rad. tophose.Uses no oil. My wife drives our other Honda. "Best car I have ever had" Would definitely have a Honda next. Nine cars!!?? The reason you haven't had problems with them is that you've never kept them long enough for a problem to develop. I've had 2 cars for my 30 years of driving. My current Laser is 20 years old, ex rental. Goes fine. The odd bit of rust... but nothing major. If you look at purchase price plus maintenance costs, it'd be averaging about $1000 (or less) per year I've had it, with almost all of that being the purchase price about 15 years ago. Maintenance needs: Cut rust from top of windscreen (stupid WOF requirement), brake pads, oil, filters, cam belts, brake light bulb, rear hatch struts, radiator top tank (stoopid plastic lid). Mechanically it's been 100% all this time. I'm a DIY guy, so the top tank and the rust are the only jobs that have needed other peoples labour. I doubt there are many 20 year old Hondas around. Those old CRX used to be everywhere, looked sporty and aerodynamic, now they're more memory than reality. I will admit one very unhappy experience though... it's onto its 3rd ignighter. These things are vital to the ignition, and they fail without any prior warning, and leave you totally imobile at the roadside, wherever that may be. The last failure was during a 160km trip to an evening training seminar. I was very lucky I had the speed to coast to a layby, rather than being stranded on the edge of a windy part of the state highway, and still not too far from home. |

I tend to change cars about once a year . So as you can imagine . . . I have had A LOT of cars/bikes over the years . I just get bored of them and want something else! Few cars I've had over the years: 97 Mercedes S280, Landrover Discovery, Toyota Corrolla, Ford Mondeo, Mitsubishi L200 ute, Nissan Skyline, Honda Integra, Mini (the real ones not those german things) - had 5 of them . About 8 motorbikes of various engine sizes . Thats all I can remember at this hour of the morning! Always fancied a tank (actual tank) or a traction engine or even a vintage car with hand crank start . For a daily driver of course . I cant imagine owning the same car for longer than a year or two . . . |

| 1318257 | 2012-12-14 22:19:00 | Always thought Honda Civics have constantly evolved, almost as it's own brand, (www.caranddriver.com) over many years as It's Honda's main nameplate (or the Accord) since the early 70's. Must be more refined from so many global variants more so than the relatively younger Focus. What medium car model of ford has survived? Nothing comes to mind here in NZ. Maybe the Escort. | kahawai chaser (3545) | ||
