163855 2003-07-30 06:40:00 Using a HP CD writer 8200 series, is it possible to simply copy a document or folder from my hard drive onto a CD - just as one would with a floppy disc? I don't necessarily want to do their fancy backup thingy - just copy some files.

Out of interest, how is the backup function different to simply copying from a hard drive?

163856 2003-07-30 08:21:00 The short answer is yes, Anna.

The long answer is: It depends on your software package as to how easy it is to implement drag and drop.

Post some details about your system and software and one of our CD-R experts will be able to help you.

(Iam not one of them, I'm a newbie at CD burning)

Cheers

163857 2003-07-31 02:24:00 Best to use a cdrw for file added slowly use nero if possible much better than most burner software roxia is easier to learn but more limited kiwibeat (304)

163859 2003-07-31 04:57:00 The only software I was provided was the installation software. Is any suitable cdw file copying freeware available? If so, where?

I'm running win98.

FYI, I have tried dragging and dropping the file from my C:/ drive onto my f:/ drive (ie cdw drive), but that results in an error message (access denied - make sure disk not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use).

163860 2003-07-31 05:09:00 If you click on this link (h20000.www2.hp.com) it should take you to the download page of HPs RecordNow, a free package to utilise your burner. Select your language and click on the "download" button. Its about 5.8 MB so will take a while. godfather (25)
163861 2003-07-31 11:10:00 Thanks everyone for your help with this...but I'm still stuck.

I downloaded the software suggested by Godfather, but when I initiated the file copy process it keeps rejecting my CDs - just spits them out! I have tried unsuccessfully on a cdrw 1-4x compactible 74 min / 650 Mb, as well as unsuccessfully trying on two cdr 74 min.

What am I doing wrong?

163862 2003-08-01 13:12:00 Why dont u download the trial version of Nero and use it to burn data cd's, then it shold be clear as to wot is causing the problem and we can help more. Go here and check out the programs on this site (www.cdmediaworld.com) and look for free software or even download Nero it self. (its illegal tho :(, to download Nero for free)

cheers,

163863 2003-08-08 23:54:00 if you are in wgtn be happy to show you how its done kiwibeat (304)
163864 2003-08-12 03:22:00 I went and had a look at the Nero site but it appears the software costs lots - we bought the cd writer 2nd hand and paid $150 - it seems silly to pay as much again for software to make it do what it should be doing anyway!

Thanks to kiwibeat for the offer to show me what to do, but I'm in Auckland. Any chance of posting some step by step instructions for dummies like me?
