163709 2003-07-29 09:38:00 I home networkrd my computers at the weekend. Now two days later I am getting a "local area connection 2 A network cable is unplugged"error message. My primary computer is XPand the secondary is win98se.
Also now when I run the networking wizard on the primary (XP) computer, the wizard is unable to complete the task.
The computers dont communicate anymore.
Under advice I have disabled "allow the compuer to turn off this device to save power" but its made no difference.
Can anyone advise?

163710 2003-07-29 10:28:00 First thing to try is to ping the IP number of the other PC. I f you can ping, indicates there is not a hardware fault (cable, hub, etc). JohnD (509)
163711 2003-07-29 11:05:00 how !!!!!!!!!!! veterannz (960)
163712 2003-07-29 11:19:00 Perhaps you should look at FAQ #42 (from the FAQ link at the top of this page) first, and check the basics. It tells how to ping a connection as well.

But on the basic level, your network cable is plugged in both ends?
Are the link lights on, beside the sockets?

163713 2003-07-29 11:25:00 veterannz. have a look at my SAGA, Network Printers, July 15th to July 28th. Like you my network was working OK, till I tried to add another printer. Then all hell broke loose. So it was definitely something I did. Good Luck Poppa John :D Poppa John (284)
163714 2003-07-29 11:31:00 I had my cards put in professionally and I bought the x-over cable from a Computer retail shop.
The main computer was set up for me so all i had to do was connect the computers. As i said it worked for a few days but not now. On the Godfathers advice I have checked the lights. There are none on.... What's the signifigance. Is it the cards, configuration or the cable

163715 2003-07-29 12:30:00 Is it xp giving that message if so check that the RJ45 has not become loose or unplugged from the NIC (Network Interface Card) this may also be the cause for no communication indicator lights on Network card beama (111)
163716 2003-07-29 13:01:00 If the lights on the NIC's are not on, you may also wish to check in the Device manager to make sure there's nothing up with the cards.

Try another cable if you can too!

163717 2003-07-31 05:26:00 Thank for all the advice. In frustration I took to my computer shop. Turns out the prob was the NEW DSE card!!!!!!!!
Everything working now EXCEPT IE will not connect on the 2nd computer. Any advice

163718 2003-07-31 05:59:00 Try the following:
Open up a command prompt, by clicking Start
-Run
type:
cmd (on 2K/xp)
command (on 9x)

enter the following:
ping 210.48.100.45

It should return saying something like:

reply from 210.48.100.45: bytes=32 time=200ms TTL=58

The time will vary

now, try:
ping pressf1.co.nz

if it comes up with errors, then you need to setup the DNS servers in the connection properties, so try having a look at Poppa John's latest thread on Printer Woes, which turned into a networking issue.
I told him in there how to setup a client machine to use Xtra's DNS servers.

Just in case you dont know, a DNS server is what converts the likes of www.pressf1.co.nz into 210.48.100.45 which is the IP address of PressF1 :-)

Let me know how you get on, or if you need me to clear things up for you ;-)

Cheers

Chill.
