| 163787 | 2003-07-30 05:16:00 | I think a bonus so big is ridiculous. Most people get paid less than $50000 a year for working hard full time all year. The All Blacks are on a salary several times that (I don't know the exact figures), and they were still demanding a $100000 bonus if they won the World Cup. Money shouldn't be a motivation to win. The Silver Ferns won the world cup, and most of them still have jobs in order to support themselves. |

I thought that the respective organisations decided how much they earned. As for a $100,000 bonus thats way too much, there are many people in Nz and across the globe who earn less then a third of that much. THey should be honured to represent their country & play for NZ but not demand more money. cheers, v.K |

Anyway,no matter if its for love or money,what they do generates millions of dollars,who should be getting that money if not the players? Id rather see big payout's go to those doing the work rather then those who control the purse(like the govenment,sporting bodies,Pen pushers and power lunchers worldwide) |

Just because someone in microsoft lets say an executive managed to persuade Apple into being bought By MS then even then $100,00 is too much for a bonus. Wots harder, working in a realistic job that u know u can hold for a while rather than hoping that this season goes well for u and that u remain next season? Come on get real, why such a big bonus for a job that they cannot guarantee to hold on to and even that title. |

Anyway,If they win the world cup it raises their profile,generating more(much much much more)sponcer money and increasing the gatetraffic. It strengthens the All black brand and makes it worth ten times what its worth at the moment. Plus the fact they only get a few years in there careers where they can earn the big money,the pay should reflect that.Especially if they improve the value of the franchise while in there short stint.They are not being paid to chase a ball for 80 minuts,they are being paid as the best rugby talents we can provide to compete in the codes toughest and most competitve series. Its a rare individual who can play a truly intelligent game of rugby,Its a skill and a gift,something to be nutured and rewarded. Geeeeeeeees,i babble on dont i? lmao...Go the mghty All Blacks. |

It is probably the only sport in New Zealand that holds any real pride, and the incentive to win may well play a big part in acheiving a decent result. The fact that they acheive money for winning along the way is rubbish, either they win and get it all, or they lose and get nothing, discourages half hearted efforts. | Veale (536) | ||

I think most of you are failing to see the bigger professional. First point - Rugby is now professional What does that mean? That means its a full time job, and that your time is devoted to that. Second point - a guesstimate would be that the average All Black lasts in the squad for 2.5 years Now putting the Super 12 aside that gives them 2.5 years to earn a wage to compensate the time that they have put in, and they have probably been putting that time in ever since they are a kid. Also take into account that when they retire from rugby, they don't necessarily have the qualifications to go into a job that we would call a "profession" thats why they end up being sports commentators. So to sum up, over there 50 odd yrs of working life they probably in total end up earning slightly more than the average $38k p.a worker. And shouldn't they? considering they are representing NZ at our national sport? |

Also, all you people out there complaining and comparing their salaries and bonuses to the average salary - look at who they are, and what they are doing. they are the most talented 20 odd rugby players in the country - with some the world, and with rugby as big as it is (isn't the RWC the 3rd most higest viewed sporting event?)who can blame them. the money is just rewarding their talents and successes, which, any job in the world does ( this could be debated, i know - but stay with me). They are just like successful business men, or the PM, or any other successful person making alot of money, doing what they love. And as roofus said, rugby is now professional, so It is a full time job, working everyday. If you think its unfair at what they are getting, the fault comes back to yourself, for not putting in the extra effort when you played a sport (rugby), or when you didn't put eveything into school, or maybe, you just haven't taken enough risks in your business - and so its still "just another little shop". And for people that didn't do these things, they're usually the ones complaining about all the people getting extra money, earining an average income, in a job they don't look forward to each morning. Comparing what an average (professional) rugby player gets to some of the TOP sporting star gets (soccer, NBA, NFL - any american sport, golf), you will see a huge difference. And my last point, the money isn't coming from the government, its coming from a "owners" (u may call them) or the new zealand club of rugby, so don't feel as if you and your life is missing out on money, you're not (its not like the Americas cup funding - ARRR). the money would have probably just went into other areas of rugby, or, like someone ealier said, the guys in the suits at the NZRFU. As long as they win the world cup, i'm not really worried at what they receive, i think they would have earned it... |
