163749 2003-07-29 22:48:00 When auto protect is enabled everything slows down, including the boot process which takes several minutes to get past the 'loading your user settings' message. All apps are very slow to load, & some won't run at all eg Outlook Express - half-starts then freezes & when I shut it down I get the 'program not responding' message. I've uninstalled & re-installed System Works (version 5.04) but no change. Problem appeared after I had major hassles doing some backups to CD - may have some relevance. Auto protect ran perfectly for a year or so before this happened about a month ago. System works kept up to date through live update. No reply from Symantec at this stage. dougt (4328)
163750 2003-07-30 00:00:00 what OS?

what ver of antivirus ? (2000,2001 etc)

have you done run the updater or just let it auto update?

in my experience nortons does tend to go awol every now and then. simply uninstall, clean out any left overs and reinstall.

163751 2003-07-30 05:45:00 running XP Home edition & System Works 2002. I've both let it auto-update & run the update myself. Tried one un-install but didn't check for leftovers - will give it another go. Thanks. dougt (4328)
163752 2003-07-30 09:54:00 also check your windows updates. if i remember correct one of the symtoms of that XP patch problem was the antivirus causeing a major slowdown. tweak'e (174)

What I do is using windows search I look for " Norton" & “Symantec” & any files that the uninstaller say it cannot remove, but before I do that,

I look in windows explorer under C:\Program Files & see if there are any folders with the name “ Norton AntiVirus “

Then C:\Program Files\Common Files & see if “Symantec Shared” folder is still there

then see if C:\NCDTREE is still there.

Then I use windows search with the above words to find if there is any left over files

Then I get messy & go in to the registry, but I Do not recommend that for newbes or people who do not know what they are doing, & make sure you have a backup before you touch it.

Hope this helps

Note: the above is for any one whos OS is win 98 - ME & NAV 2002 - 2001 ( I think is the same)

they are files and registry entries that have not been removed by the uninstall program. tools like regcleaner make it easier to clean out unused registry entries. as far as files goes it depends a lot on the programs. eg with nortons look for any nortons and symantec folders. don't forget to check the temp folders as well.

163756 2003-07-30 22:16:00 Thanks Stu & tweak'e, I was planning a removal of 2001 followed by an install of 2003 and I just wanted to be sure I didn't rip over some detritus on my HDD.

Cheers
