164187 2003-07-31 10:28:00 No problem with ads. In any case, I use Spybot S&D to block ads, and it wouldn't exactly be super hard to go and find the IP/URL of the location of the upcoming ads and manually insert those into my hosts file.

What really gets me with ads is that the way to get around people blocking ads is by hosting them on the same server as the website, same URL, etc, but that doesn't suit the advertising agencies because they could claim that you are being misleading in stating how many people viewed, and how many clicked, the ad in a certain period... so you're caught in the middle, really...

Back on topic, I immediately thought that occaisional prizes would be concerned, I mean, sponsorship calls for that sort of thing...

I don't subscribe to PC World, but when I read it, I'm not fussed over who is advertised or mentioned in the magazine.

I don't use notifications. Reason being, when I signed up, I thought that it wouldn't suit me getting all these notifications for replies to threads I've created or posted in, considering how many replies topics can get, and also how much I used to use the forum (as opposed to now, I've toned down my use somewhat). I still think the same. What's more, I personally think that fiddling around with the controls at the top of the page ('Watch this topic', 'Turn off watching' or whatever they are) is, well, too fiddly and time consuming if I turned on automatic watching, and not much better if I manually turned on watching of threads.

I wouldn't "bag" the sponsors, etc, unless there are badly designed ads. I never saw that Compaq/HP ad, but I found the AMD one that appeared recently too be excessively large.

It wouldn't affect my ability to talk about the sponsors' products openly or objectively. I have my [sometimes unfair] biases, but I don't voice them often, and if I were too, any sponsors wouldn't affect what I say.

;-)

Little more On-Topic:
I feel that if a product is already being knocked or commended on PF1, then a sponsor advertising with PressF1 will likely not change people's viewpoints for better or worse.

We've never allowed ads of anything like that size, so that wouldn't be an issue. And at present the notification emails are text-only anyway. If they were to be html-based you could still choose text-only in your presferences, and we'd ensure that the sponsor's logos in the emails were kept down in terms of filesize.

Sorry, can't get specific on that front at present - but they would be companies who sell computer hardware, software, peripherals or services ... does that narrow it down for you ;-)

Thanks guys for your feedback - keep it coming

164190 2003-07-31 10:41:00 If it is all how you mention I'd be happy with it. They've got to be ready for us to say what we feel about their products though.

What was so bad
about the iPAQ ad?

164191 2003-07-31 10:51:00 Well I'd just like to say that all this talk about cannibalism in the Royal Navy is a load of absolute tosh. Everyone knows its the Airforce where the problems are!

Capt'n Cholmondley-Williams Rtd (Mrs)

I assume that means good as well as bad depending upon what you feel about the products right? Bouquets and brickbats?

Like you I think it's important that this forum retains its objectivity. Although having said that, I can remember threads in the past that have gone off the rails and become unbalanced about particular products - which is generally when Bruce or Robo step in and remind people of the need to be BOTH fair AND objective

164193 2003-07-31 10:57:00 For once in my life I will be succinct:

Yes to all the positives, and no to all the negatives.

Go ahead with the sponsorship deals.

What about a sponsor for WFTWE :|
Surely there's room for one more. :D

164194 2003-07-31 11:01:00 I do use the email notification, it wouldn't bother me if it was sponsored, so long as it didn't take any longer to view. Althou have realised that when I post a topic I am curious to check straight away for an answer for so will probably not choose that option next time.

I think this is an excellent service and if it requires sponsorship to keep it going - so be it.

From the little I have seen of your site, I don't think sponsorship will influence contributors comments in any way, be that for or against a product - I think honesty will prevail.
