2003-08-01 23:26:00 | My CD rom keeps crashing the computer when in use. It's not the CDrom itself, I tried my spare and it did exactly the same thing. It's more likely to crash when I am on the internet, but can happen anytime. In the guts of this thing I have one ribbon going to Hard Drive, then to CDrom, another ribbon going to CDwriter. HD is set to master and CDrom to slave. Correct? Does it matter which ribbon goes to which items? Also, I believe the ribbon should go to HD first and then to cdrom - yeah? On a ribbon with 2 plugs, which is considered the primary connection and which is 'piggybacking'? The middle or the end connection? Does it matter? I suspect none of this has anything to do with it, It's more likely to be that I'm using WINME and it refuses to let me change IRQs (Will be reformatting to either XP or 98se in the near future!) BUT... I gotta try everything! Any suggestions? winME on 800mhz with 320 ram...uhhh anything else you need to know?

2003-08-02 00:42:00 | I was told that was unwise - that I wouldn't be able to copy from rom to writer if they shared a ribbon - I'll try it though. | Bobble (3142) | |

You were told wrong :) If it shares a channel with the Hard drive (as it does now) it'll slow down any hard drive processes that are currently running whenever you start reading a CD, as a CD Rom drive runs a LOT slower than a Hard drive. Putting it on the same channel as the writer will be fine - you should have no problems writing from the CD Rom to the CD Writer. Mike. |

2003-08-02 01:06:00 | Ok tried that and lost both rom and writer. All plugs were in fine and yet neither showing up anywhere. What'd I miss? | Bobble (3142) | |
2003-08-02 01:10:00 | sounds like either corrupt drivers (try reinstalling motherboard and any aspi drivers) or a fault in your cd writing program (a couple of buggy ver of nero caused similer problems). | tweak'e (174) | |
2003-08-02 01:20:00 | Good ideas . . . but unfortunately I've tried re-doing drivers and reloading nero and it made no difference . Thanks anyways :)

2003-08-02 01:25:00 | BTW, it's not copying that's a problem. I can copy fine from HD just not from cdrom since it brings on a blue screen and goes ka-put. The problem is in playing music CDs, playing games etc.

2003-08-02 04:01:00 | An update (even if I am talking to myself!!) Have managed to get both CDs on the one ribbon with a bit of jumper fiddling and crossed fingers . Unfortunately I still have the same problem if I try to play a CD . I reckon I was probably on the right track to start with, IRQ or something similar . I don't seem to be able to get passed that so unless anyone has any brilliant ideas I think I'll just wait and see if I can sort it once I'm reformatted and have a different windows set up . Thanks for all your help BOBBLE :D
