164437 2003-08-01 09:57:00 I'm in RedHat, but in KDE click on the KDE thingy which launches the start menu dohickey (Ok.. Well my terminology ain't that great :-P), move up to system settings and then soundcard detection. It requires the Root Password, but it tells you what SoundCard it picked up and asks you if you want to run a test which just sends a guitar chord through each speacker by itself and then both together...

Well that's RedHat anyway...

164439 2003-08-01 12:43:00 Howdy Kiwi_2003,

Could you let us know if the system has detected the soundcard and just not enabled it or whether it hasn't found the card at all. You can open the Mandrake Control Centre (this will require the root password to access) and this will allow you to check the hardware and settings.

Or you can also use alsa to help configure the sound card.

164440 2003-08-01 12:54:00 According to google it uses a KT400 chipset with generic via ac97 audio. I'm running a gigabyte board that uses the same. The driver to use is called "via82cxxx_audio".

To set it up:
- Start mandrake control center.
- Goto hardware and click on "hard drake...".
- Under soundcard select "vt82??? (ac97 audio)".
- Hit "run config tool"

It will suggest a driver. It should suggest either "via82cxxx_audio" or "snd-via82xx" *.

- If it isn't on the first one, hit "let me pick any driver...", and choose "via82...".
- You may need to check everything is unmuted in the mixer before it will make sound.
- Also if you use fancy (ie >2 channel) speakers swap some of the plugs around if its still not making noise.

[* The second driver is technically better, but it doesn't want to work for me.]

164443 2003-08-02 06:08:00 If I read this right, in both XP Pro and Mandrake you have no sound from your CD drive when playing audio CD's, but you can hear sound from music files stored on the hard drive?

Get a pair of headphone and plug them into the headphone socket on the CD drive - can you hear sound now?

If you can, check that the audio cable connections on the back of the CD drive and on the motherboard have not come loose.

164444 2003-08-02 06:22:00 No.. everything in window xp pro is working fine.. just my playing audio cd in mandrake isn't!!!! kiwi_2003 (4341)
164445 2003-08-03 03:27:00 Have a look in the Control Centre (or K.. K ..) for the "Services". I'm not sure, but I think alsa (the sound server") isn't started by default. If it isn't ticked, do it. :D Graham L (2)
