164508 2003-08-02 12:32:00 Try changing all those hypens to commas (similar to the changing to spaces or periods above), and then save it as a text file.

Now when you open it with Excel choose file-type "CSV - Comma Delimited Text", and now it should read every comma as a new column.

Else you could try just importing the whole thing into Excel - there's a function in there under Data > Text to Columns where you can tell Excel to start a new column every time it sees a particular character (such as a hyphen).

164509 2003-08-02 22:37:00 Thanks Marty I have zipped up original and sent.
I will try on Monday and find out who made the list. It was originally an Excel file in Australia but NZ changed the prices from $A to $NZ.
They also changed it to Word
Thanks again
I agree there is some sort of format problem but its strange even when its changed to text only I still cant select bunches of text. It just selects right along the row.

This is because there are no real columns in the document. If pseudo-columns were created by just using the space bar to insert a gap between the words on each line to give the appearance of items lined up in a column (from what Marty said), then of course if you try to select a "column" word is just going to select right across the row as per normal. The document needs to be in a table form so that you can select columns to sort.

Hopefully Marty can get this sorted for you.

164514 2003-08-03 09:29:00 Ted the problem is the space bar has been used to make the columns and to go from one row to the next, to make things harder ever other line has an enter keystroke in it, this is why the problem is so bad, when word sorts lines it gives you an option to what keystroke to sort with, because there is different keystrokes (enter & space) at the end of line the problem exsists. Hope this kind of explains it but I will have a bit more of play with it some more.

P.S Ted you didn't live in New Plymouth did you?
