2003-08-01 23:14:00 | Downloaded this viewer software some time ago, the problem now is that it not only brings up the current e-mail attachment, but others' as well, even those e-mails that have been deleted, using Shift/Delet keys. What's going on here ?. If I uninstall it, what will take it's place ?. Win 98SE on a pentium dinosaur. Les3 Ps. Would love to update to a more powerfull machine, but can't go on the OE and upgrade as well. L

2003-08-01 23:36:00 | I found your message a bit confusing - when is it bringing up old files? Does it open lots at once? or is it when you click to go to the next picture? When you open an attachment do you select 'open' or 'save to file'? I'm no computer pro, so take my words with a pinch of salt... but I wonder if irfanview is perhaps going through the temp files and finding old pictures? Otherwise, going through one of your folders and finding saved files. If you uninstall irfanview then your picture attachments will most likely use internet explorer to view pictures. :) Bobble

2003-08-01 23:57:00 | Bobbie, thanks for prompt reply. Receive five e-mails, all with attachments. Open first e-mail and then open attach. Close it or forward on. Open second e-mail and then open it's one attachment, the IRFRANVIEW screen shows 1/2 in the forward/backward box. So I now have the option to view the first e-mail's attach. and the second e-mail's attach. If I forward this second e-mail on it will also pick up the first's picture and include it to the slide show. Perhaps the program is anticipating and wants to send all of the funnies at once !. It's foggy here in ChCh, but I hopes this explains it a bit better. Thanks again. Les3

2003-08-01 23:58:00 | I would be surprised if it is IrfanView's fault. Do you compact your Outlook Express folders regularly? That would get rid of the deleted items permanently - nothing in the Deleted folder is properly gone until it has been compacted. Remember to ensure that OE is put into Offline mode before you start or you could have unexpected problems.

2003-08-02 00:07:00 | Hmm it looks like I have read your question wrong as you posted more information while I was still composing. Sorry about that. Have not heard of this problem before, but I always save attachments to a folder and scan them with AVG prior to opening, even the pictures. If you do that prior to viewing them with IrfanView from the the folder they are saved in your problem may disappear?

2003-08-02 01:05:00 | Susan, thanks for that, yes I do compact folders, regularly, but think OE may be disconnected each time. Use the Shift/Delete keys to delete Inward/Sent/Deleted folders, would this be the problem ?. Susan can't see why we should have to save the attachments, or is this a way of testing IRFANVIEW. Regards, Les3

2003-08-02 01:44:00 | Bobbie and Susan thanks for your replies. Have unistalled the software and am using PaintShopPro instead, although it doesn't bring up a full screen as well the other. Les3

2003-08-02 03:16:00 | Hi Les, Susan gave you are very good reason why "we should have to save attachments" Maybe you missed the point. It's not to do with testing Irfanview, but as she explained, it is so you can do a virus check before opening the file.

2003-08-02 03:23:00 | Hi Les I'm not entirely sure what is happeing here either but, suggest you look under Option > Properties and check out your file associations, file handling (is ask before copying & ask before moving, unchecked?). I don't know why it would be loading files into a slide show unless at some point it was asked to do so and a default set. Try under File > Move File, Copy File & Slideshow and have a look for file save or load to some user/system directory (grasping abit here not on win 98). Its a great wee program and haven't srtuck anything like this before. Would be a shame if you had to give it up. Cheers Murray P

2003-08-02 06:51:00 | Now that you have uninstalled Irfanview you could try reinstalling it and see if the problem is gone. There is also no need to hold down Shift when deleting items in Outlook Express because the items are not going into the recycle bin, they are going into OEs deleted items folder. As mentioned by someone else the folders need to be compacted before messages are permanently deleted.
