| 164865 | 2003-08-03 04:25:00 | Thought I'd drag myself into 2003, and update IE from 5.5 to 6 SP1 from the PC World CD plus the latest patches on my Win98SE computers. Guess what? Those shortcut arrows that TweakUI wont remove are back. This is a bug that MS have not bothered to resolve. To fix this problem the shell32.dll file has to be hacked into, and the shortcut arrow in there replaced with a transparent icon. It's easy to do with the right tools, a hex editor, and an icon maker that allows transparent icons (not a plain white or coloured background) to be made. I already had these from the last time round. The general method is outlined on Axels site, look for Patched Shell32.dll Bug + Fix, or click here (members.aol.com) |

Especially handy when one is in the habit of using the Shift key along with the Delete button.... |

Especially handy when one is in the > habit of using the Shift key along with the Delete > button.... I wonder how many people actually put whole folders and files on their desktop... On my desktop, apart from the system folders (which I guess are still shortcuts of a sort), there is only one non-shortcut on my desktop :) And that's just a text file I put there yesterday containing something I need to remember. Mike. |

I'll take that as a compliment... :p :D > I wonder how many people actually put whole folders and files on their desktop... I do it only rarely... when I have downloaded drivers or something and need them handy. That is why I need the shortcut arrow identification, because I am used to the few desktop icons that I have being shortcuts and not files/folders. :-) |

Size it so that is a little bit bigger than 1024x768 pixels (this is so the task bar in the image will be hidden underneath the real task bar). Set it as wallpaper. Right click on the desktop and remove the tick from beside "show desktop icons". Then watch them trying to access their desktop icons. :D |

What I did was similar (although having to play around with the image size was never an issue), but first I took a screenshot, set it as wallpaper, moved the icons over some (clicked on Line up icons so they were where Windows would place them), and took another screen shot... continued this process until the whole desktop was covered in icons. Then I'd randomly select one of the fake "icons" and put the real one over it, and click Line up icons again and believe me you wouldn't know the difference :) and when you tried to click on an icon you had to try half of them before you got the real icon :) Of course I didn't do this at home... no, I did it at Polytech through my computer classes (I usually got bored in my computer classes LOL) then logged out and left the poor guy/gal in the NEXT class to try to figure out what went wrong :D Mike. |
