| 164844 | 2003-08-03 01:11:00 | My Autoexec.bat includes this line: "C:\CDROM\mscdex.exe /D:IDECD006" , and my Config.sys file in total, looks like this: " DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS /TESTMEM:OFF DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\setver.exe DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS DOS=HIGH,UMB [common] DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\DRVSPACE.SYS /MOVE DEVICE=C:\mscdex.exe /D:IDECD006 I have 2 problems, both should have, I expect, generic solutions as I have generic hardware. 1. The HD is in MS DOS PAGING, when I would like it to optimised, and, 2. The CD ROM device is not ready. Some attempts made have created an extra RAM drive. Would this be preventing CDROM from working? If so, how do I get rid of the 2KB RAM drive? The HD is a problem, where my sound driver keeps popping up in the hardware manager dialogue box and cannot be deleted. I think that this is necessary in order to make my computer find whatever generic driver in needs (if any) to optimise the HD. Also, are there any lines in my Config.sys file that need not be there? e.g. 16 bit drivers which would cause the problem? Thanks in anticipation, guys. BTW - I did the IDG survey, but since I deltree cookies on startup, there's no problem there with me. |

| 164845 | 2003-08-03 01:21:00 | Normally, your config.sys should contain a device driver reference for your CD (for dos), such as: DEVICE=C:\CDROM\CDROM.SYS /D:IDECD006 /V The reference to mscdex.exe in the config.sys is erroneous :| |

| 164846 | 2003-08-03 01:55:00 | I'd make backup copies of AE.bat and config.sys first then make some changes: > My Autoexec.bat includes this line: > " C:\CDROM\mscdex.exe /D:IDECD006 " , I don't know what this is doing there, and it may be causing a conflict. > and my Config.sys file in total, looks like this: " > DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS /TESTMEM:OFF > DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\setver.exe > DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS > DOS=HIGH,UMB > [common] > DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\DRVSPACE.SYS /MOVE > DEVICE=C:\mscdex.exe /D:IDECD006 I don't know why you would need setver.exe in config.sys unless you are running some old software that is looking for an earlier version of DOS, and the drivespace line is not needed unless you are operating a compressed drive. The command to load dos high is usually just DOS=HIGH too. Is this an old 486 computer by any chance? It might help if you post details of your hardware and OS so thet we can get a handle on what you are using, the types of programs you want to run, and if it all worked properly before ??? at some far distant time. | 164847 | 2003-08-03 03:47:00 | Thanks, wuppo and Billy T. My AE & Config files now look like this: AE: C:\ASPICD.SYS /D:IDECD006 /V deltree /Y c:\windows\tempor~1\ deltree/Y C:\windows\history deltree/Y C:\windows\cookies deltree/Y C:\windows\Applic~1\Mozilla\Profiles\default\552lz ff0.slt\Cache\ PATH C:\WINDOWS SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T4 and the CONFIG: [CDROM] DEVICE=C:\ASPICD.SYS /D:IDECD006 /V Computer still works - but with same results as before. You can see that I have taken all advice given. Billy T - Yes this is an old 486 job, upgaded to a Pentium 1 (AMD K5). The computer worked properly as far as I remember, sometime late last year. To describe all my hardware and programs may be a daunting task. I might say that I use Mozilla as a browser, BlackIce as a Firewall, WIn 98 SE as an OS, and I use mainly word processing, spreadsheets, email (Eudora). For multimedia, there's DXDIAG (Direct X version 4.09) and Yamaha as a sound card. Early version of S3 for graphics, and AWARD Bios, an early version. HIH for U 2 help me. |

| 164848 | 2003-08-03 03:50:00 | The call to mscdex . exe in autoexec . bat should be there (for the CD to work in DOS . Windows probably uses its own, but it doesn't matter) . mscdex . exe isn't a driver, so must not be in config . sys . You need an actual driver (with a . sys extension) . |
