164800 2003-08-02 13:03:00 Hey all

I have recently noticed that when connected to the internet (via 56K to Slingshot), my internet icon in the taskbar shows that i am constantly sending / recieving traffic, even when no browser/ messenger service/ file sharing program is running. When i check the status of the connection, the rate at which data is being recieved is about 5kbit/s, which is reasonably good for a 56K connection.

I am running windows 2000 (service pack 3). And as far as I can remember, have not installed any new software/ hardware etc, and I'm not networked with any computers.

I have AVG's free AV running and fully updated and ran a scan last night, and it didn't pick anything up. So i'm a little spooked by the whole thing, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

164801 2003-08-02 13:16:00 Do you have a Compaq Keyboard? There was a case where the drivers of these were talking to home. Failing that give a run of ad-aware and spybot. -=JM=- (16)
164802 2003-08-03 01:46:00 Hi rusty,
Mine has been doing the same for a couple of days. Has stopped now.
I am using Sygates Firewall, so when I noticed continual traffic I opened up the firewalls main display to see what was sending and receiving. It was: Generic Host Process for Win32 services. Something to do with svchost.exe

I ran all the tests too, to make sure everything was still ok and it was. I think that generic host thingy is a windows thingy and ok. Perhaps someone else can throw some light on what it is.

In the meantime, I suggest you download and install Sygates Free Personal Firewall.

or ZoneAlarm Firewall. which is more (in my option) easer to use :)

164804 2003-08-03 02:33:00 Check ypur services and you will probably find that "automatic update" is running. It will be "consulting" with MS to check/download updates in the background. Maybe?
Still advise running Spybot and Adaware anyway.
