164789 2003-08-02 12:59:00 I have finally "reinstalled" all software onto the spare hdd to replace the mess on the old OEM hdd. That means Windows ME (shhh) and IE/OE 6+

Howvere I have now inherited an icin onto the desktop with the description underneath of ~

I was think that it resulted from one of my "online updates" - Windows ?

What's it all about, please

and how do I uninstall it ? etc

164790 2003-08-02 13:13:00 Funny you should mention this Woof. I noticed a similar thing on the Win98se computer downstairs... just assumed it was a shortcut my sister had renamed accidentallly, might not be though. -=JM=- (16)
164791 2003-08-02 13:19:00 you are right in thinking it comes from your new updates, it is a hicup in in the system, something to do with address book, it will reappear on your desktop sometimes when you alter your address book, do not worry about it, just delete it, gerrypics (323)
164792 2003-08-03 00:33:00 There has been a few people on here asking what ~ that is doing on there desktop, so you are now alone with this problem :) stu140103 (137)

Heh, now that just proves that you don't read all PF1 threads after all. This topic has been mentioned several times now, so far. ;-) :D

I've never said that I do read all of them - I used to though - but I do open EVERY thread.

on that computer.

164795 2003-08-03 09:00:00 Okay, so maybe it HAS been on this forum before but WHERE, please

BEFORE I posted I searched the forum for ~ and got no results. So what does one search the forum for if it's not ~ ? (this a serous question, please)

Alos as a result of the reloading and updating I now have the following in startup (when I look by run/msconfig):-
ssdpsrv
mstask
msnmgr
LoadQM

and Windows Explorer tries to connect to the intenet, according to ZoneALarm - why is this, please?

have I got a couple of Microsoft online update functions wanting to phone home ?

Now to install NeroInCD and my scanning software and hopefully that's about it, apart from the above

By the way, we are talking Windows ME, Office97 and MSN 5 etc

164796 2003-08-03 09:14:00 Funny that it doesn't search for the ~ character, but you are right, it doesnt.

Instead, you would find the posts by searching for the word tilde

Or just go here (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz)
