164745 2003-08-02 11:02:00 Hi

I'm thinking of buying a new 120GB HDD for my computer, and i'm going to run WinXP on it.

But the thing is that I heard people saying Windows XP is not compatible with 120GB harddrives, or there is a problem with running winxp on 120GB drives.

Is that true, if it is true, how would i solve the problem, or should i just get something smaller, like a 80GB one.

thanks for help

It is more dependant on your Motherboard and BIOS.

What make and model motherboard do you have?

Any limitation would be due to your PC BIOS, and nothing to do with XP.

164749 2003-08-02 11:10:00 Easy fix, just partition the Hdrive into smaller partitions 1x80 1x40 or something like that. I prefer to have windows on a small partition so if I have to reformat I don't loose my data files etc,
PS don't know if XP has a limit size or not, but must be easy to find on the net

No it doesn't... at least not as low as 120gb (if it has one it's probably much much higher than anyone here would be using LOL)

164752 2003-08-02 11:50:00 Technically, the NTFS system should be able to permit volumes up to 18 billion gigabytes.....according to Google...... godfather (25)
164753 2003-08-02 13:03:00 I think you're reffering to XP having a problem with drives over 137.5GB. In that case there you just have to upgrade to Service Pack 1 for the fix.

As in my case, I have a new 120GB hard drive working with only WindowsXP. If things don't work, you can always update your bios, but try it without the update first. Also NTFS is good for such a huge drive, just don't let partition magic make the NTFS partitions or you'll be in trouble!

Also if you want to know which 120Gb hard drive to buy, go for the:
Seagate Barracuda 7200.7, model no: ST3120026A (www.seagate.com). It has 8mb of cache, 7200RPM, 8.5ms seek, and is the best deal you are going to find. Trust me I researched for a whole week on the best deal before I bought it for $233 incl postage. I'm pretty impressed with it so far :) I bought it from Paradigm PC's (http://www.pp.co.nz/) - great service too btw.

Good luck!

164754 2003-08-03 07:57:00 I've got a 120gig drive in my win 98 machine and it works fine. Why shouldn't it? andy (473)
