2003-08-03 00:21:00 | is there anything around that can completely block porno websites... i know i been here wif this before...and it has worked but apparently m8s have found a way thru...so am back again looking for a way to stop it... i was thnking of setting up another user on pc with everything that a admin user has...but i cant work out how thats gonna fix it... i know i wont b able to stop every single sexual website around... but i was hoping for something that can block most by just saying page not found or re-direct it to a website like nzoom.com or pressf1.....and then if they attempt to go into a new porno one..or one thats not on the blocked list..then i can add it... and yeah i want it to be password protected like it automatically starts up on pc start up...and to disable it..or to add websites..require a password... hope someone can help :) i'm at present looking around websites for free blocking software... cheers

2003-08-03 00:31:00 | Why don't you add more website addresses to your hosts file, and that should block them? | caffy (2665) | |
2003-08-03 00:32:00 | they actually use it for work stuff (typing, graphics etc) since they dont have a computer at home... so they come here and use mine...its just when i decide to go to the supermarket when they are working..they surf it...so it makes me think i gotta stay home... i've warned them this time that if it happens again then they cant use it when they want..but only when i am home... i wouldnt mind but it would be annoying coz then i'd have to work my things "around" them..just so they can use the computer correctly... so i was thinking...i could try a blocker..that actually cannot let them in... so yeah please dont put blockers on here and also say "how" it can be removed/get through" as yes they do now read pressf1...(sometimes i put their problems on here)

2003-08-03 00:57:00 | Do they need internet access for their work? Probably not if they are just working with graphics and documents. Change your ISP password, and make sure it is not set to automatically login in or always remember the password. A bit extreme and definitely an inconvenience to you. Also, make sure their account type is limited. If they are going to abuse your generosity in using the PC, they certainly shouldn't be allowed access to system settings. Remember this is your PC, and their surfing habits will make your computer susceptible to diallers/hijackers etc, and you will be left with the resulting mess.

This would stop them renaming the hosts file if that's how they are getting to the websites that way... Otherwise, you could try finding a public proxy server that filters content? |

2003-08-03 01:39:00 | IT'S YOUR COMPUTER, YOU MAKE THE RULES....... TELL THEM THAT IF THEY ACCESS ANY PORN SITES, YOU WILL BAR THEM FROM THE COMPUTER. YOU ARE THE ONE DOING THEM THE FAVOUR. AFTER THEY HAVE GONE HOME, CHECK THE HISTORY OF SITES THEY HAVE BEEN TO, AND IF THERE IS ANY SITES YOU DON'T APPROVE OF, THEN DON'T LET THEM BACK ON. IF YOU MUST INSTALL A PROGRAM, AND YOU USE XTRA. THEY PROVIDE A FREE PORN BLOCKER. BUT BEWARE, SOME OF THOSE PROGRAMS BLOCK LEGIT WEBSITES

2003-08-03 01:45:00 | " Why don't you add more website addresses to your hosts file, and that should block them? " do a google search for porn, sex, intercourse and any word closely related to the genitals both medical and colloquial. Make sure you have the adult filter turned off in your google preferences. Now imagine manually adding all of those sites to your hosts file... Norton Internet Security would be my pick... It has a parental filter and accounts. Create a supervisor password, create an account called "restricted" "children" or "mates" depending on how patronising you are feeling at the time, and password protect that too. Make sure the restricted account is the default and voila! Each time your mates try to porn surf they'll get a response saying something along the lines of "this page has been blocked blah blah" Then if there are any sites on the parental filter list that you do actually want to visit, you can probably exclude them. With a firewall and adblocker as well, NIS suddenly doesnt seem like a bad purchase after all huh ;)
