165225 2003-08-04 07:26:00 hi :)
i am having probs accessing my floppy disk drive.... if i try to access it thru my computer everything freezes...same if i try thru windows explorer. before it started to freeze tho it was telling me that my disks were not formatted....i tried several disks and got the same msg for all of them... i haven't had my pc apart and i get no other error msgs at start up .... i tried to run nortons disk doctor on it but that caused a freeze as well.
tho only thing i have done differently was to install photoshop...but i have uninstalled that but floppy drive is still unaccessible....but then again i dont know when this happened as i seldom use the floppy drive
if anyone has any ideas they will be gratefully received :))

165226 2003-08-04 08:08:00 Hi, what OS are you using, win 98, win 2k, XP ? You may have an IRQ conflict or corrupted floppy drivers but, it would be better if we knew a little more about your setup before prceeding.

165228 2003-08-04 08:23:00 It would pay to ensure that the cables are plugged into the FDD securely, and that the other end of the flat cable is securely plugged into the motherboard.
That involves opening up the case.

It could be the drive has died, and as they are cheap, replacement would be preferred to repair.

165229 2003-08-04 10:19:00 I've had a similar problem, and it's fixed by installing the VIA 4 in 1 drivers. You need to make sure that your MB is actually based on the VIA chipset...

165230 2003-08-04 10:46:00 Hi again. As GF says could be a cable has worked loose/faulty or your drive has died but, there are some things you can check before opening the case or if you don't feel comfortable pocking around inside at this stage.

I'll assume you don't have a tape drive or anthing like that and you havent't installed anything with back up components lately, as per your first post.

1) Have a look in Cotrol Panel > System > Device Manager , look for red X's or yellow exclamation marks next to the listed devices, eg, Floppy Disk Controllers & Floppy Disk Drives. If you find any of the above annotaions double click on the device and see if there are any messages in the properties as to what is causing the error, post back with info.

2) Type Control + Alt + Delete and end every process except explorer and systray. Try your floppy and if it works you will need to reboot and do Ctrl + Alt + Del when your up again and end every process except the above two and one other. Work through all the running processes, rebooting each time, untill it freezes again and you have your culprit, being the last one you left enabled.

3) Uninstall the floppy from Device Manager by double clicking on the Floopy Disk Drive (after expanding the + next to it) to enter properties and click on Uninstall on the driver tab. Reboot when prompted, you will be asked for your windows disc unless you have all the files on your hard drive. This will reinstall your floppy drivers in case they have become corrupted.

4) Maybe this should be 3) a and 3) should be 3) b. Do you have a known good floppy with some data on it, a win 98 boot/startup disc would be fine. Reboot with the floppy in the drive, if it doesn't load from the floppy you get any error messages, write them down and post back. Or if your ok with DOS, reboot to DOS without a disc in the drive (theres an option to restart in DOS in the win 98 Start > Shutdown menu), pop the a good non-essential disc in the drive and try to format it by typing format a:
Write down any error messages you get. If its fine in DOS it's windows or one of your other programs so do 3) above to find out which one. The next steps will rely on what error messages, if any, you receive.

165231 2003-08-07 04:52:00 hi :-)
thanx to u all for replying to my post. i did what Murray P suggested in 4) going thru DOS. everything worked fine there so tried to format a disk and got an error msgs 'Invalid media or track0 bad...disk unusable...format terminated. I tried another disk and it worked perfectly:). i went back into windows and inserted the same formatted disk and got another freeze. i shutdown and restarted...tried the disk again and all was well. i tried the original disk again and it also worked!! so once again thanx to u all :)
no doubt i will be back at some stage to pick brains again lol
