165137 2003-08-04 01:16:00 My Mandrake 9.1 has a firewall option on install but it only seems necessary when using the comp as a server. I'm new to Linux so I'm not sure. As I'm using a broadband always on connection there seem to be the possibility that a hacker could access my WindowsXP partition from Mandrake because I can see all my windows files from Mandrake so if some one were to access my comp through Mandrake then they would have complete access too. I have Zone Alarm on WindowsXP but this is no use if I'm connected from Mandrake.
Can someone give me some advice on the risk and what to do about it.
On another problem I still can't get my dual monitors working with Mandrake.

165138 2003-08-04 01:27:00 Did you look up TwinView in the README file in:
/usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/

Look up TwinView :-)

Or are you wanting to use a second VGA card altogether?

www.nvidia.com
Get the latest drivers, you're still likely using the nv or vesa driver :-)

165141 2003-08-04 07:26:00 I would recommend running the firewall since your using broadband. Your system will be running some services (eg samba) which will probably be otherwise accessible from the outside world.

Running "netstat -l" in a terminal window will show you whats running. I would also recomentd a visit to http://scan.sygate.com if you want to check externally.

If you want a nicer firewall interface, grab a copy of firestarter (http://firestarter.sourceforge.net/).

165143 2003-08-07 11:17:00 Must apologise for the lateness of this reply.

Mandrake 9.0 and 9.1 have the Shorewall (http://www.shorewall.net) on the installation disks. It seems to be fairly good and can be set up easily in the Mandrake Manager.

I have downloaded firestarter and it seems ok so far.
