165047 2003-08-03 05:48:00 Hi there, we have just had Win ME installed on one of our puters (98 was not available), and in device manager it says our monitor is a plug'n'play, it's actually a CompaqMV520..how do I get this recognised? I am hoping to be able to change the settings, as its set on 16 colours, and sucks!!! The screen is extremely "grainy". I am unable to change the settings now for some reason. Also...how do I get rid of the bloody revolting task bar (office) up the right hand side? With that and the normal one on the bottom there's hardly any screen left!! amazon (3976)
165048 2003-08-03 06:01:00 Monitor problem:
Your monitor has been recognised :) it's a plug'n'play monitor, and should work fine as is. As for changing the settings up from 16 colours etc., this would be associated with your video card and video card driver, not your monitor. Your monitor just displays what the video card tells it to, so if the video card is saying 16 colours, then that's what it shows. You need to update your video card driver before you'll be able to change the colour setting.

Office Toolbar problem:
Browse your start menu until you find the Startup folder (Probably Start > Programs > Startup), and see if there's an "Office Toolbar" or similar option in there. If so, right click on the option and select "Delete" from the menu. Now when you restart your computer the office toolbar should be gone.

You will need to install your graphic card drivers or if your have onboard graphics, the drivers off the motherboard CD. If you have the monitor driver for the Compaq you can also install that. Plug and Play is just a general description as that is what the monitor type is.

Right click the Office shortcut bar and looks for a setting to remove it. To resize the task bar at the bottom, just drag it down to the size you want.

165050 2003-08-03 06:46:00 If you point your mouse at a spare space on your desktop then right click, a dialogue box will appear.

Click on "Properties" (at the bottom) then "Settings"

You will then see the drop down menu to change your colour settings.

165051 2003-08-04 03:48:00 Right on, Baldy. B-) Nice to see someone recommending the simplest thing to try first. I wonder how many people have hunted for and downloaded drivers (installing which includes changing the wrong OS setting which is the cause of the problem) when they could have just changed the OS setting. :D Graham L (2)
