2003-08-04 22:10:00 | Hi there Parry, tried your suggestion, but after pressing OK I get a box saying "can't find blah blah blah blah"......cheers | amazon (3976) | |
2003-08-04 22:27:00 | Its because the path to Winword is different than my example. Use Find-Files and enter winword.exe. When it finds it write down the path where this is located. You can either enter the path manually or when you click Start|Run use the browse button to find winword.exe. Now put one space then /r after the path. Note that with long file names you must put quotes around the path with the /r outisde the quotes as per my example (note space between path and /r and make sure you use forward slash for /r and backward slashes for the path). If you cant handle this it may be best to re-install word if you havent already done so.

2003-08-04 23:03:00 | Hi there Parry, yes, I've decided to get Word reinstalled, it probably seems a trivial matter, but word is the main reason my computer gets turned on...apart from hassling you guys!! It's difficult when you're not a computer genius (me), I can handle very, very basic stuff, but that's it. This comp is going to the shop to reinstall word, as I've never tried that sort of thing. So thank you for your help, it's appreciated very much. have a great day.

2003-08-04 23:25:00 | Your most welcome. This is the place to come if you have PC problems so never be afraid to ask even if you think it may be silly. It's not very difficult to reinstall word at all, but if the shop will do it for you for nothing then it's up to you. If you decide to get your feet wet and have a go just do the following:- Insert your Office CD. A menu will automatically appear and give you some options. Sorry Im not at home so cant check the exact wording but it will have an option to re-install office. Just click OK or next and it will give the options of which component you want to re-install (like Word, Excel etc). Just put a check next to Word or go for the whole enchilada and reinstall everything. It will take a few minutes and may ask you to reboot when its finished. Afterwards, hopefully everything has returned to normal. Good luck.

2003-08-05 06:31:00 | I may be too late here since you were talking about taking your PC back to the shop, but if you still have it try opening Word (no document loaded), go to Tools > Options > Save and in the box "Save Word files as . . . " make sure it says "Word document (* . doc)" . I will be very surprised if that does have anything to do with it, but there is no harm in trying since you seem to have quite a stubborn problem which is normally very easy to fix .

2003-08-05 09:55:00 | Hi Amazon. It's advisable to keep the topic in one thread. You have opened three threads about the word problem. That can be confusing, but I guess most have followed your frustration. In case you missed it, in your last 'thanks' thread, where you advised that you intended to have word reinstalled, & "That'll fix the bugger", I replied: Maybe, maybe not. I hope it does, as this problem has been frustrating for you, and also I imagine for the many posters, who have given you sound advice. It's all to do with file associations, as explained. i.e. Set the .doc files to be 'opened with' MSWord, (Winword), rather than wordpad. Hopefully the reinstallation may do this, or allow you to do it. Best wishes for a successfull outcome. Goodluck.

I have just got a e-mail from amazon about this in the e-mail he said: was just going to reinstall office 97 but the cd isn't giving me any directions so I'm stuffed!! I have not been flowing this thread, but I have been flowing the other thread. Has any one suggest that he try repair word( Iam not sure if word /office 97 has the option)???? If that does not work to reinstall windows???? |

2003-08-05 12:16:00 | Hi Amazon I hope you are still following this thread. You are obviously having a very frustrating time but I think you should be able to sort this out quite quickly without having to reinstall Word. It appears to me that you are able to write and save your docs in Word without problems which suggests that Word is working OK. The problem lies with the retrieval process. Here is the sequence I suggest - 1. Check where your docs are being filed. Go to Start, Find and enter (using Elephant's example) Granny'sLetter.* . This will find the file whatever its extension. 2. Write down the complete path - C:\ ... Granny'sLetter.doc or whatever. 3. Gun up Word and go to File, Open, then use the Drive, Folder etc dialogue boxes to switch to the path and filename you have written down. This should load your original file back into Word where you can edit it at will. 4. When you are ready to save it go to File, Save As and select Word Document in the File Type dialogue box. Click on OK. This will save your file as a Word file (Word will add the extension .doc if you do not put one in yourself - you can add others of your choice such as .let (letter), .asg (assignment), .rpt (report) etc to distinguish your document classes). If you always subsequently open your documents using the File, Open command from within Word they should open correctly. Most of these points have been made already, but if you follow the above sequence you should be able to load your original files correctly and it saves messing around with file associations. While on the subject, I would strongly recommend that you create a dedicated folder for storing your Word documents. I call mine Wnwddata. This keeps all your Word docs in a single folder (although you can create subfolders within it) where they are easy to find. If you wish to do this create the folder (call it what you like) then (in Word) go to Tools, Options, File Locations tab and type the full path (eg C:\Wnwddata) in the Documents line. If you do this Word will automatically file all your documents in this folder when you save them (unless you specifically direct it otherwise) and will, by default, open in this folder when you select File, Open. Should you add your own extensions to the filename (eg .let) you will need to select All Types in the File Types dialogue box in File, Open for all file types to be displayed in the files list. Hope this solves your problem.

2003-08-05 22:10:00 | And keep an eye on your previous thread (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) as well. It is best to keep all related queries in the one thread, otherwise you can miss good advice, or posters to one or other thread may repeat advice already given. Hope you are close to resolution by now. Cheers Billy 8-{)
