Hi Amazon, one other thing i thought maybe you should try is this - (however you didn't say which version of Word you are using or what o.s? - so my directions are for Word 2002 (office xp) using win xp). When you right click the file & choose "Open with" you said "Word isn't in there" - well at the bottom use/click "browse" to where Word is, which on my computer using Word 2002 is: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10 and the file you need is "WINWORD.EXE" - and remember to tick "Always use selected program to open this kind of file" then Click o.k ---- I hope i have explained that clearly, if not post back :-) Goodluck and if all else fails you can get rid of Wordpad (on xp anyway){re your question on that in other post} i did it by mistake some time back :8}, but you shouldn't need too ;-) |

2003-08-04 12:39:00 | J Zep...I will try your suggestion, although I have 98se and I'm not sure of my Word edition...worth a shot but will probably be different. I feel you guys have covered everything, and maybe there is a fault in my computer? Anyway I think I will have to send it in and get Word reloaded...as I use it a lot. Thank you everyone, I really appreciate your advice and time! Cheers.

2003-08-04 13:34:00 | *.txt files are normally associated with Notepad or Wordpad. The files you are trying to open in "My Documents" have what extention? If it is GrannysLetter.txt and saved as such then it may well open in Notepad or Wordpad. GrannysLetter.rtf could open in Notepad or Wordpad or Word. GrannysLetter.doc should open in Word. Just name to us the file you are trying to open by Explorer and clicking there. Could be *.txt, *.doc, *.rtf Etcetera. Help us to help you.

2003-08-04 14:03:00 | One last thing now i know what you are using, i had a quick look on my older win 95 puter which has Word 97 on it and it is located here: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\WINWORD.EXE So try browsing there, but it would be just as easy for you to use find/search to locate it: Start - Find - Files or Folders - then WINWORD.EXE, then note down where its installed and browse to there to set the file association ......... Which on win 95 is done as below........ :-) :-) Also i noticed on my win 95 its not listed as .doc or DOC under "registered file types" (its "Microsoft Word Document":D) --- so this may be the same for win 98 and be confusing you? Try this again: My computer, View, Options, File types Tab - Then under "Registered File Types" look for "Microsoft Word Document" - Then check the "File type details" while that is highlighted, if its not showing:"Opens with WINWORD" - Click - Edit - In the actions box click "OPen" - Click Edit - and then specify the program you want to use to open these files with {Word}, use browse to where you found the "WINWORD.EXE" file located. I hope that helps a bit as the instructions i gave earlier were on xp and i imagine win 95/Word 97 would be closer instruction wise.

2003-08-04 14:27:00 | Yep... That makes sense to me. You probably made better sense that I did. It's little difficult when WE can't see what THEY see. :-)

2003-08-04 21:59:00 | Hi there, firstly re Elephant's post, they have a *doc extension on them, which is the correct one, and when I go into folder options where it gives you the option to open with all the programs, eg Dr Watson etc, I do not have Microsoft Word Document, or in fact anything to do with MS Word in there, only that b****y wordpad...... | amazon (3976) | |
2003-08-04 22:04:00 | Also, my Winword.exe is located in program files, is there any way of getting in to this to change any settings? But wait, there's more......when I look in Window's explorer, on the first screen that comes up I can't see anything to do with Word, or my assignments etc. My apologies for being a computer dunce.....

2003-08-04 22:04:00 | Perhaps try re-registering Word. 1) Start|Run 2) Enter path to your winword file then /r afterwards eg "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Winword.exe" /r 3) Click OK
