2003-08-07 01:45:00 | When I run Scandisc in windows (98se) it doesn't work. I get the following error message: SCANDSKW caused a general protection fault in shell.dll. The system locks up and when I press restart a window pops up saying 'cannot read shell32.dll'. I can successfully run it in DOS, but this problem in windows bugs me! I tried replacing the shell.dll and shell32.dll files but still no joy. I also tried scanreg /restore in DOS but no joy. Scanreg reports no problems.

I think the only way you can repair scandisk is to reload windows( over the top) (you will not loss any information, e.g. e-mail, documents etc ) |

2003-08-07 02:02:00 | Also, in Win98SE (on my upgrade CD), the file dskmaint.dll is in Precopy1.cab. | Terry Porritt (14) | |
2003-08-07 02:04:00 | Terry - do you suggest I replace that dll? | Bruiser (846) | |
2003-08-07 02:08:00 | Godfather - thanks for the link. I'll do as Terry suggested and look for the file on my CD and replace it. Thanks. | Bruiser (846) | |
2003-08-07 02:34:00 | Yes, GF replied just before I was going to post the same link. The MS page suggests replacing that dll but refers to a Win95 location. The actual location may vary a bit depending on the Win98 disk.

2003-08-08 10:48:00 | I successfully replaced the dll file as suggested, but the problem still exists. Oh well - not the end of the world as it works in DOS mode anyway! Thanks to all.
