166541 2003-08-10 07:02:00 Linux system can't access web through XP server in a home network

Hello all

My machine is dual boot Vector linux 3 . 2/win98
To access the net it goes through an XP pro system that uses Sygate server, This works perfectly under Win98 but as for linux . . . .

I have the system to the point where the two machines can ping each other under linux,
but they can't seem to do anymore, I can't acess the web through Opera (under linux) as it keeps saying

"access denied"

is there something I should be setting inside 'Opera'

Any help would be much appreciated

Both machines now have PCI network cards

166542 2003-08-10 09:58:00 I presume that you have set up the browser in the Linux PC to access to net via the XP gateway? JohnD (509)
166543 2003-08-11 04:08:00 You will have the XP machine set as gateway. That's working: you're getting an error message. B-)

The "access denied" will mean exactly what it says. XP is saying to itself: "Who is this git? I don't know that machine". You will need to have an XP user account for the Linux machine to use. The "Guest" one will probably work, but I don't know the details of XP. :D

166544 2003-08-11 10:29:00 Ive always used a 3rd user who is not on the Gateway PC (Also WinXP... Professional).
Ive never had an "Access Denied" message or the likes.

Guest isnt enabled... for me either?

Do you have a static IP or DHCP'd?
What are your DNS settings?

166545 2003-08-11 10:46:00 What about firewall settings? JohnD (509)
166546 2003-08-12 12:20:00 OK
Thanks everyone

could you please explain a little further,

>The "access denied" will mean exactly what it says . XP is saying to >itself: "Who is this git? I don't know that machine" . You will need to >have an XP user account for the Linux machine to use . The "Guest" one >will probably work, but I don't know the details of XP .

i see what you are saying, but i didn't set up any user account for the win98 side of the linux machine and it logs in ok

I am using a static ip, (although I was using aa dynamic one for a time)

Where would i find my DNS settings are they in the /etc/ directory or am I way off base

166547 2003-08-13 01:02:00 A I said, I have been spared knowing about XP . :D Your DNS settings will be accessible through the Network area . . .

It might be just an IP address problem . By default, it will probably not give access to a computer which is not in its own network . You are definitely "seeing" the XP machine, that's where the error comes from . If you are using the 192 . 168 . blah1 . blah2 . . . only the blah2 part can differ .

Either allow the Linux to get an IP address from the XP DHCP server (if tyou are running that), or make sure its IP address is "legal" to the XP

166548 2003-08-29 09:51:00 The error message i am getting is

Could not connect to proxy server Accesss denied

i have tried to find this message on the net, but 90% of the pages are in german or some other language

i have checked my proxy server settings, they are set for the gateway machine at port 80 (I have also tried port 8080) but nothing seems to make a difference.

I am utterly baffled as to the best of my knowledge it should go.

so help me please

and where is the word for the weekend, i haven't been here for a while and i am starting to miss it.

thanks Nigel

166549 2003-08-29 10:22:00 Try disabling the XP firewall in the network cards propeties-advance tab. mark.p (383)
166550 2003-08-30 06:34:00 i have just discovered i can ping the outside world, but i still get the same error message, surfing the net i find othern people with the same problem have to set therir DNS servers up, I tried setting mine to the one on Xtra but it didn't work and i got the same error

so once again any help would be appreciated
