166792 2003-08-11 09:38:00 With both Mandrake 9.0 and Debian 3.0r1, upon booting from the CD, my computer freezes just after the language selection prompt, and at it (respectively). In both cases, the Capslock light is on, instead of Numlock.

Could it be my USB mouse and keyboard?

166793 2003-08-12 04:30:00 Could be ... :D

I'm struggling through Mandrake 9.0 because my laptop's video was too modern for RH 7.1 to work :_|

I'd suspect something like USB. Make sure that legacy support for USB is enabled in the BIOS. (According to the USB standrads, that shoul;d fix it ... ;-)). Also, have a look at the Mandrake documentation ... there might be something you can enter at the boot time to tell it about USB KB and Mouse.

166794 2003-08-12 05:53:00 Hi agent

Whats your mobo? nForce chipsets have a particular problem with linux and usb especially as I am finding out to my horrer with a first time install. Mandrake 9.1, Asus A7N266-VM, disable USB in BIOS in Advanced > Chipset Configuration (or your equivelant) and see how it goes. I'm having to learn how to compile before I even know have a reasonable grasp of the OS. I,m very impressed that the OS will let me fiddle at that level at all :O, I'm on a learning curve that is 2nd nature to most nix users if the forums are anything to go by.

166795 2003-08-12 06:21:00 Well, my computer isn't advanced enough to have a nForce chipset.

I should think USB is enabled in the BIOS, because the devices work with Windows setup fine.

Might try with my old PS/2 keyboard and mouse.

166796 2003-08-12 06:41:00 That should work :D. Taditional hardware works best. There's been more time to discover all the things which can go wrong and fix them.

Or you could try Murray's suggestion and disable the USB legacy.

I had troubles installing Mandrake 9 using the laptop's touch pad, so I plugged in a PS/2 mouse and told it to use that. Once it was installed, I can leave the PS/2 one off, and it accepts the touchpad with no problems. (It even takes a tap on the pad as a button press ... which I thught I might have to download a driver for).

166797 2003-08-12 09:51:00 Yep USB enabled for win2k & disab;ed for linux (pain) . But I've managed to install network MCP drivers and I'm about to check if the USB is ok now . I think I made the error of trying to install an rpm binary rather than use source files and build them . Have printed off that much info I don't have enough fingers and thumbs to keep a track of what I'm doing . Turn the heater up and bare get the toes out, I think ;) .

GL, do you use your linux disto(s) for work and if so what are the pitfalls?

Sorry to hijack your thread, if you don't like tell me and I'll desist .
