lol, I'd rather have 5% minimised CPU usage with Media Player than 2-4% with crappy WinAmp!

I tried WinAmp and didn't like it, I had it going for two weeks and it crashed/hung at least six times. MP 9 has never, ever hung on me and I use it every day! Media Player gives me everything I need and a user-friendly interface my gf can use to make her own chick-flick CDs. Spyware? Pah! Resource-hungry? Hardly, have plenty to go around thanks.

Plus if I go to play a game of course I'll close it down! What kind of gamer leaves RAM-using apps like MP running in the background when playing? WinAmp is popular sure, well programmed maybe, maybe not, but just not my cup of tea thanks - I also prefer 382Kbps .wma's to 192Kbps .mp3's - what kind of sucker compresses music to a quality that's inferior in quality (yes I can tell) just to save a few MB's?

When will u learn :p

166876 2003-08-18 01:16:00 Windows Media player has hung on me many times, and I've used it on different machines, and OS's from 98 to Win2K3 server!

You can download a plugin for WinAmp 3 to burn CD's, not too sure about WinAmp 2.x though.

If I have a Game, I like my music going... I use XMMS in Linux which is a WinAmp clone, but why should I close down my music just because I want to play Quake 3, or Counter-Strike/Half-Life? C_S even has a plugin you can download to control winamp from within the game!

BTW - What's your PC stats?

Also, I can tell the difference as well, and can tell you there's a difference between the two codecs. If you really want best quality, ask Tweak'e for a Loss-less codec, he's mentioned a couple before :-)

Either way, Im not gonna nock you for using WMP, this was a survey just to see about CPU Usage while playing MP3's, not a flame war for Fav. Media players!

:-)

Isn't that distracting though, when you are trying to concentrate on staying alive? What about the games' own sound effects, how do you cancel them out in order to hear your music? Or do you have both the music and sound effects blasting you at the same time? :D

I agree with JM here

Does it really matter ?????????

166879 2003-08-18 02:27:00 Point taken about it turning into a bit of a flame war there, my apologies! So what conclusions have you come to Chilling Silently?

From my pov I'm happy with my results (I've posted them up previously) in comparison to all the others - how about you with yours?

166880 2003-08-18 03:58:00 What conclusions have I come to? Good question!

So far it would appear that most people use WinAmp, and that CPU usage no matter what the CPU speed will sit around 5%, probably due to other apps running in the background!

As for gaming, You can hear both at the same time, its not too bad really..

An you change the music when you've just wiped out all your enemies and you know they're waiting to re-spawn ;-)

I still manage to stay alive :p

Me. If winamp uses hardly any cpu cycles or memory then its perfect for the rock/techno music you use when playing something like Counter-Strike etc. You manage to find a good balance between music and the game sounds. The music is quieter than the game sounds.

I use Monkey's Audio lossless codec, so hah. Miles better than mp3 and wma for sure. Its basically a perfect wav off the cd, at half -> 3/4 the filesize. 382Kbps that filesize must be huge so why not just go lossless, and the filesize won't be much bigger. If you were even serious about lossy codecs you would go with lame or ogg-vorbis cos they whip the pants off wma or mp3.

Somebody should really do their homework.. :p
