1345047 2013-06-08 06:12:00 Hey there Vince - with such a great name that you have (Guess what mine is! lol) I thought I'd code a quick app for you :)

you will need dot net framework to use it, but you will probably have it allready even if you dont know if you have or not lol.

If you would like it customized or more functions added or something just let me know, I'm always keen for making bits and pieces :)

here is the download link for you (www.thestudio69.com/kiwi1/Minute Convertor.exe)

1345048 2013-06-08 12:00:00 Jeez you guys make it complicated!

The basic error that started all this palaver was a simple failure to recognise that by convention in writing, the hours and minutes are separated by a colon, not a period, the latter being easily mistaken for a decimal point (as indeed it was at one stage above).

Thus: 4:17 = 4 hrs 17 minutes.

I'm no mathematical whiz, in fact at College I was so bad at maths that my classes stopped when I was 14, but there cannot be too many people out there today who don't know the basic multiplication tables, unless 'new math' abolished them in favour of obfuscation and calculators.

The whole calculation is basic mental arithmetic 4 x 60min =240, 240 +17 =257minutes.

In a practical sense, 257 minutes becomes 4 x 6 = 24 = 240 minutes +17 = 4 hours 17 minutes

As another example 194 minutes becomes 3 x 6 = 18 = 180minutes +14 = 3 hours 14 minutes

Once you have a method, it becomes simple, just use the six-times table to get the first two numbers.

Computer programs are unnecessary, unless perhaps the user suffers from some type of number blindness, in which case they might still have a problem with any form of calculator, be it computer based or otherwise.

Cheers

1345049 2013-06-08 22:32:00 Yeah I don't see the problem either I just do it in my head. There are only realistically 4 numbers to remember and 3 would do most of the time, i.e. 60, 120, 180, 240 = 1, 2, 3, and 4 hours respectively. You Just choose the largest value that goes into your total number of minutes and that gives you the hours, then subtract it from the total for the minutes.

So simple subtraction does the Job, 257 = 240 ( 4hours ) + (257-240=17) minutes. I could make an excel formula to do it for me in about 30 seconds.

Like this, put the input in A1, make A2 have the formula =int (A1/60), make A3 have the formula =A1-A2*60 and you have a column with hours and a column with minutes. Change all the As to Bs and put a title row in and it's even easier to use.

Several other people have explained the same thing in different ways and inphinity seems to have done it in a much more compact formula, I don't know the T%60 part myself and tend to break my formulae into small easy to understand steps as above.

How did I make it complicated? Simple division on a calculator :p

It's easy to do once or twice, but when I spend 2 or 3 hours filling in the information for a couple of dozen titles, it becomes tiresome to say the least. Near the end of a session it makes my head spin.

Thanks bevy121:)

The little utility that bevy21 wrote for me is just right.

A candidate for the new site that I suggested here;_pressf1.pcworld.co.nz

1345054 2013-06-15 04:41:00 Hi Vince - glad to hear my wee tool is useful :)

I have done what you asked and displayed the results in the same pane below the input box

Also filtered out any non digits from being entered, or an empty number field

Made the enter key perform the "convert" function as well.

auto clears the input and sets curser focus back after converting

larger text for the result

and should trap most errors now as well

Any thing else just let me know

Here's the updated one for you to download (www.thestudio69.com/kiwi1/Minute_Convertor2.exe)

1345055 2013-06-15 05:01:00 Thankyou Bevy121. I appreciate it very much.:)

I wish I could do coding, but my resources are fully committed.
